whats up guys, i dont know if you know Jeff browning but i juss bought his tranny, and its got a galant 1st gear with a welded center differential. i got a great deal on it, its almost brand new, plus i needed one. But i was wandering if any of you guys have tried it, its goin on my awd 90 tsi. if any one else has it, can you tell me the difference in driving every day, cause im kinda worried that it will make it hard on daily driving. any input will be appreciated, thanks
charles

I've got a welded center diff in my '91 GSX :dsm: and have had no problems. It's been daily driven in rain, snow, shine whatever for 30 - 40 thousand miles. The only time I even notice it's there is when making tight, slow corners like in parking spaces. ANY other time it is unnoticable.

thats good to hear. what bout when launching, how much of a difference does it make, is it actually worth it? what does it do when you are makin tight turns, thanks for the input

Yeah with a welded center diff you won't have to worry about shattering it with a good AWD launch. It's a pain when making tight corners, like when parallel parking.

I don't have any way to compare with and without welding as I've done many other mods in the meantime and learned HOW to launch. The main reason I welded mine was because the original diff was worn and caused my center shaft (the one that goes into the x-fer case) to fail TWICE!

It's an inherent problem with these center diffs and I've heard from alot of people that had the same thing. I didn't feel like paying another $400 in parts and the hassle to fix it again so I welded it. Problem solved.
what does it do when you are makin tight turns
When you do tight, slow turns the inside rear tire slips on the pavement and the car needs alittle extra gas to move. Only in a tight turn and only going slow. Turning at an intersection is no problem.

I don't do any parallel parking but TSi92 is right.

I have a diagram with instructions on how to weld it for strength if anyone is interested. E-mailme at [email protected] and I'll send it to you.

ok you guys have helped. i know how to launch pretty good, but i still have the 3bolt, i havent launched with the welded cent, will it be a prob with the 3bolt or should i not even try until i get my 4bolt? what you guys think bout that?

with the 3bolt dont floor it and dump the clutch at 6k I would start a 4500-5000 semi slip not enough to burn the clutch but enough dump to get moving or try higher if it works for you, but now your power is 50/50 all the time befor you would launch and the front tires would spin due to weight transfer and CDw/ viscouse(power to the wheels that slip) But if you can get a 4bolt for a good price go for it make sure its a LSD though. Good Luck

allrite that helps, well what bout down shifting to 1st. like say im duin 40 in second through town(w/ galant 1st gear) and i juss down shifted in to first to race, would that screw anything up?

haha I doubt any 1st gear will do 47mph...but if you want my opinion then that would be somebody that I would beat even if your car was quicker. The time it would take you to downshift to 1st gear to race =) from a 40mph roll, only to smack at like 7 grand or so then peg the rev-limiter at 47mph (if it actually went that high), you could haev been well into 2nd gear in your peak power band meanwhile youd haev to shift to second to even remotely catch up..... dont do it

well i was juss told that it will do 47 in 1st. So your sayin by the time i down shift the guy will blow by me? i can see what you mean, but around were i live alot of peeps do a 40 roll, we have a fog horn and on the third horn we go, so it would be at the exact same time, or should i juss leave it in first and hold it then juss hammer it? alot of peeps will not race me from a dead stop,,,,,,,hmmm i wonder why(caugh awd) ;)

I'd use second gear for sure. You can launch from a roll in second and get a good jump. Here's how; push in the clutch, put it in second gear, when the horn gets to the second beep rev the engine up high, like 6 or 7k, then on the third beep, dump the clutch! Doing that on a good RWD or FWD car will spin the tires. Not on AWD!
