codE on cd player, won't work, universal code??

My stock cd player (infinity system) on my 1997 spyder stopped working the other day and now displays codE on the screen. I know in order to get it working again you have to enter in the "special" 4 digit code. But,

When I bought the car I never got a code from the previous owner to enter in. So I'm wondering if their is some universal code that will allow my cd player to start working again.
I really don't want to have to buy an aftermarket cd player if I dont have to....Any help is much appreciated!

There is no apparent universal code. You need to pull the bezel from around the radio/HVAC controls, and peek in on top of the radio to get its serial number. Then call a Mits dealer and ask them to look up the code for you. If they give you any shit, mark them off your list and go to the next dealer in the phone book.

The stock head unit goes to codE when the power's removed from it for about 10- or 15 minutes. If this just happened without you having pulled the battery, check the wiring to the unit and make sure nothing's broken or loose.
