All my other gears work fine and dandy, but when I put it in reverse and let off the clutch to drive backwards, something pushes the stick out of the gear, anyone ever hear of this? Its been like this since I bought the car, and its starting to get annoying.....

Yeah sometimes when I try putting it in reverse, it'll look like it's in reverse but when I start to back up I hear a little grinding and the shifter pops out of place. I usually can tell whether or not it really is in gear if I try to put it in reverse, if it's not then I just put it back in neutral and let off the clutch and push it back in then try putting in reverse again. Usually this works on the first try sometimes I have to do it twice.

I tried the search and it didnt help, I can get my car in reverse, but when I try to go somewhere in reverse and let off the clutch at all, it pops out of gear and grinds, so basically i have no reverse and i'm tired of pushing my car out of parking spots when there are no pull throughs available........

This is a good description of the problem I was having with my old car. Although it might feel like it was going into reverse, it was actually getting stuck and if I tried to go with it halfway in it would grind and pop out. What you have to do is jam it in there like crazy or let out the clutch in neutral and try again and keep doing it until it goes ALL the way in. A huge pain in the ass. I think this is the problem you are having.

Mine usually doesn't go into reverse on the first try. Try shifting it into first then into reverse. This works for some people including myself.

the 93 tsi i had did the same thing, turned out the plastic bushing that connect the right/left shift linkage cable to the transmission was just about completly blown apart, it was basicaly just the ring jiggling around on the pin.
i bought solid metal bushings and it sorta fixed the problem, that trans wasnt in the best of shape so i still had to go into first then into reverse real fast(but i had to go through second to get ino first so it was like a 2-1-r thing)

it was really a combination of the trans, that destroyed bushing, and the clutch(2600). your problem will probally be something completly different but its always something to check, the linkage is right under your MAS

I recently put in a ACT 2600 and my shift linkages under the hood are good, I'l try the 1st or 2nd gear and then reverse thing again and check the linkages under the shifter, does anyone know of anything else? THanks for the input guys.....

On my 1G, Mine never goes into reverse really well. I just keep pressure on the stick, and when I slightly let out on the clutch, just so it barely grabs, it will fully engage.

Try that,

I've posted about this subject before. Do exactly as Engima states above, this applies to every 1G I've ever come across.

in my 1g, it never likes reverse, does the same thing yours does. I normally will shift into 5th, bring it out and all the way over the left then into reverse, seems to work for me.

And many other cars including my 95 and my 87 stang.

for me i cannot get into reverse or 5th. i don't know too much about trans., but i know the basic. the linkage seems ok, but i can't figure it out. so i guess i'm gonna take it to a local mechanic.
now my question is what you guys think how much it would cost to fix the problem (reasonable range)?

thanks.

My best advice to you about transmission problems would be to call TRE (Team Rip Engineering). The lead tech there is top notch and probably can help you along your way to finding out why your 5th gear isn't shifting correctly.
