when i turn left my car makes a scratching sqeak noise... the CV joint boot is busted open, someone said somethign to me about a axle..i dont know....thanks for anything

as i turn left, after every rotation of the tire it makes a scrath noise. There is the transmission and the axle that comes out of that. The boot is open. Im not sure if that clarifies but ......someone said something about a driveaxle....

ya its prolly ur axle...but also ur boots are off so they are letting all sorts of hell in ur bearings....ide get them cleaned out or just end up getting new ones

They probably meant your CV axles. People call them CV joints and some people call them CV axles. Either way, having a tear in the boot is not good, and your CV joint is probably bad, so I'd work on getting that replaced. Even if that doesn't fix it, it's not good to have a torn boot.

i also have torn cv boots. i don't seem to be having any trouble right now, but i know it's on the way. my dealer said it would cost about $200 to replace the half-shafts (cv shafts). however. if you let it go for too long it could also ruin your bearings. you'll hear it when that happens. hopefully that sound you hear isn't your bearings. dealer says to replace the bearings is an extra $200. so your looking at at least $400 if you don't get it taken care of. even if this isn't what's causing your problem, you need to get this done. otherwise it soon will be your new problem.

this link should be helpful if you want to see what all is involved with changing you cv shafts. best of luck...

Have you checked your brakes. A lot of brake pads have a warning indicator built into the pad that will make a scratching/screaching noise when the pads get too low.

Usually a cv joint/axle makes a clunking noise while turning left/right when they go bad. Definately replace the boot and inspect the joint. The joint may not be necessarily bad if it's not all dirty and there is still grease around it. NAPA sells the replacement boots that come with the grease, boot, and clamps. They sometimes have them in stock and don't need to order them. If you're replacing the outer boot (close to the wheel) you need to replace both of them if using the NAPA boots. some places sell 2 piece boots so you can just replace one (inner or outer).

the car has 160,000 miles onit so i went ahead and bought replacement CV shafts for both the driver and passenger sides. they are direct replacements and total only cost me 150$ so no big deal. thankyou to everyone who dropped some knowledge.....:barf:

This is covered under the Lower Ball Joint recall and is a safety recall that the dealer should be paying for. Did you have the work done at a Crysler/Mitsu Dealership? If so, they should have told you about the recall. If they didn't, then they're trying to rip you off and you should be reimbursed completely for all charges.

In a safety recall (ie. ball joints rust, wheel falls off on highway, you crash and die) it doesn't matter how many miles are on the vehicle - they have to cover it fully.

Bring it up to them and see what they say. If possible, get another dealership to run your car's VIN first, and see if there are any outstanding recalls on it. Possibly your dealer (if really dirty) marked down that the recall has been done just now, and pocketed the money themselves.

Definately good to follow up on it and just make sure that they weren't trying to screw you, or any other future customers.

Just for future reference, you don't hafta replace the axle if you have a torn boot. For less than 15 bucks you can get a boot kit from Autozone and as long as the joints haven't started snapping, you can pull them apart and clean em then regrease them with the new boot installed and it is as good as new.
