Hi,

I'm having troubles (lots) with my DSM. I've only owned it a few months, it's a 1994 Eagle Talon TSi with a 6-bolt swap from a 92. I don't know how many miles were on the 'new' motor originally, but it had good compression before the swap. The cylinder head is only a few thousand miles rebuilt, and aside from that the car is stock with the exception of Eibach Springs and a Crank Pulley I put on to replace the stock one when it broke.

My troubles started a few weeks ago when the car began to overheat and belch white smoke. After realizing it was VERY low (over a gallon) on coolant, I also discovered that the thermostat was bad and replaced it. The car ran fine since, and a few days ago started to irregularly stall at a stop.

The strange part is, it only seems to happen after the car has been warmed up, driven, shut off, and I try to restart it. When I turn the key to accessory, wait additional time, and start the car, it seems to run fine. The only other times it has stalled besides at start was at extremely low speeds - particularly turning slowly - i.e. parking lots and the like. It's only happened a few times, but it's happening regularly. I thought it might be the Fuel Filter or Pump, but on the way home today something new started to happen. Now, whenever I'm under boost and shift gears, I belch some white smoke from my exhaust. At least, I think it's white - or maybe grey - hard to say when I'm trying not to hit the person in front of me in traffic :)

Once I got off the interstate and to my first traffic light, I noticed smoke coming from the hood and pulled over to check it out. Now it seems to be smoking from the turbo - and there's what appears to be oil or coolant on the support below it, and it's also smoking from behind the intake manifold.

Any ideas? Aside from at idle, which is a bit lumpy or stuttery, it seems fine. Where should I start looking?

Thanks.

First thing I would do is double-check your compression numbers now that you are seeing smoke around the head of the car. If that checks out ok, pull of the MAF intake pipe from the turbo and wiggle the turbo wheel to see if there is any shaft play. If it moves at all (especially in & out) expect to replace that soon.

As far as the stuttering at low idle, it could be a few things. Change out the standard stuff first (ie fuel filter, fuel pump if its the original, intake). Your ISC could be bad, you can simply check that with a voltameter to make sure its running correctly.

hope that helps some,

Idle Speed Controller. If you remove your stock UICP hose (the one from ur Throttle body to your stock BOV), you should see it right under the Throttle body elbow. Just unplug and test with a voltameter. If you have a Chilton's, it'll show you the proper ohms it should read.
