I have a 93 GST that is very hard to shift. The shifter moves fine forward and back but it is very hard to move side to side. I have taken the cables off and they move fine. Help, Thanks

There is a spring that controls the side to side movement, also a little bushing on the bottom of the shifter, make sure their installed right. Maybe slapping some grease on them will help.

The shifter and the cables move freely when they are disconected. It seems to be at the transmission end of things. Is there anything externally to do there?

Pop your hood, make sure nothing is going to interfere with the cables, they do extend a good serveral inches.

Also make sure that the cables are aligned and adjusted properly. If they're twisted they can bind and be difficult to shift.
