i have a 95 gsx, 5 speed. with reverse indiglo gauges (not too fond of them, they were on when i bought the car) and my mph messes up, but not all the time. For example, i'll be driving for 20 mins, going about 40-50, then the needle will start jumping up and down, sometimes it settles, other times it doesnt. Usually when the needle does jump, when i use my turn signal, the needle moves in sync with the blinker up and down. But when i use my blinker before the needle messes up (maybe first 10 mins of my drive) , the needle doesnt jump. I was going to change back to the stock gauges, but after i noticed this, i was thinking of changing out my whole instrument cluster.

In addition, my battery, brake, and coolant like ( my lights that are on my dash when my keys in before i start up the ignition) sometimes SLOWLY turn on (dim to bright) as im driving, then disapear.

Someone PLEASE help!! i changed my battery, and if anything i might just change the whole cluster, but i would like to know what's going on so maybe i dont have to. My other needles work out fine. I think it might be electical since the needle moves in response to my blinker at times, but then i still dont understand the battery, brake , and coolant lights dimming on and off. Also, if i do change my instrument cluster, i was looking online at them and would it make a difference in the cluster came from an automatic or manual car? any help would be appreciated!!

thanks

on the back side of your transmission is the speedo cable. Make sure it did not come loose. You can find it right in front of the rear transmission mount on the firewall. You can see it from the passenger side of the car.

If your lights dim when the blinker is on, chances are your voltage regulator is going out. It would be easier to change the alternator then the regulator.

wow, sorry, i really was looking for a while for a topic like this, but i guess i overlooked that forum. ill check it out and see if it helps, thanks for the quick replies!!

i checked that forum link, and my cable isnt in that spot from the picture. I tried to go by description, but still couldnt find it. Do i have to take pieces out to find it?

And your alternator is dying.

+1

The same thing happened to me just as you discribed when my alt. decided it didn't like life anymore. When I would roll down my window, power windows, and the lights would go crazy and the tach would just keep going up and down even at idle (I don't remember looking at the speedo). I took out the alt. the next day and took it to the local parts store to have it checked and it turned out it was over charging ,almost 16.5v!!!!! So yea I would just switch out the alternators that should fix your problem.

i think i meant the sensor? in the other forum, its the thing the finger was pointing to in the picture. I just ordered a new alternator, when it comes in, ill get it installed and see if that helps
