Okay so i have a 1990 GSX, it seems to have a pretty bad ignition system problem. Now dont start the oh go search shit because i already have and i havent found anything useful that i havent done.

The engine runs like it is misfiring, and the check engine light is obviously on. I changed the plugs and wires today, also ran the datalogger that said it was the ignition coil. But i was told if something else goes bad it would cause that code to show, so i wanna try and eliminate all other symptoms first. Plugs are NGK 7's with accel plugs. Stock ignition coil.

Any other suggestions on what it may be?? And if it is the coil itself where can i buy one? OR should i go with a MSD setup?

ALL INPUT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

Thanks,
Justin

Yes I would do the msd set-up but if the code it put out was for the coil. I would replace the coil with a cheap stock one first to make sure that corrects the problem. Then do the msds and you can find the stock one at these places and you can more and likely order the msd one from one of the places as well Pep Boys, Advance Auto, AutoZone, and etc. Good luck.

I agree with streetlegends if the code is saying coil replace it and make sure that it is in fact the coil.

Yeah i mean im sure it is..i just changed the plugs and wires...made no difference....so im getting a OEM coil pack...

Anotehr question...im hoping it isnt the transistor for the ignition...but if it was that item would it still show the ignition coil code?? or does it have its own code?

There are plenty of things that could cause a misfire and a coil-pack code to show up, inlcuding a bad CAS etc. Maybe you have a bad wire somewhere, I'd go with what streetlegends said first, then upgrade. Unless you're sure what it is don't start changing stuff. Also, if you don't exactly know how to properly check it, go to your local mechanic and ask him to give you a print-out of the procedure to diagnose the code from Mitchell's OnDemand or ALLDATA, he should know what you're talkin about when you mention those. Just make sure the print-out is for the right code, it will also give you all the possible reasons.

Same code for both but old coils go out all the time while power transistors rarely do. Coils get weak with age. You could pull a plug, clamp it to the block, connect spark cable, have someone turn it over and see if the spark is weak. I'll bet it is. Since you changed plugs/wires the only things left are coil, transistor, ECU - my money's on the coil.
