newbee engine problem

:cry: :cry: i took it out one night and was driving it around and then it made this hardcore clunking noise. i look at the balance shaft belt it was toast. i replaced it but it still makes the clunking noise. i took off the thinking it was bent valves but the head looked ok. i was wanting to know what would be wrong with instead of removing the balance shaft to leave it there but just take the belt off, you know to just eliminate some possabillities but not have to do all the work LOL. help me out im new to these car and i so far like them until this happend.
 
are you getting alot of vibration as well or just a loud noise? if your belt is messed up you need to replace both balance and timing belt at the same time! dont cut corners on this, also make sure you have the balance shaft belt and oil pump pully in there right timing positions.

Sounds like the balance shafts arn't in sync! Remove the balance shaft plug on the rear side of the cylinder block and insert a Phillips screwdriver {shank diameter 8 mm (.31 in.)} through the hole. The balance shaft is in the correct position if the screwdriver can be inserted at least 60 mm (2.4 in.). If the inserted depth is less than this only 20-25 mm (.8-1.0 in.), the oil pump sprocket must be rotated one full turn and timing marks realigned. Recheck the balance shaft position using the screwdriver to ensure that it can be inserted 60 mm (2.4 in.) or more. Keep the screwdriver inserted until timing belt installation is complete! Personally I would remove the balance shafts all together!

it makes a hard core noise too, and like the only way it would run is if you had it floored but it barely ran at that
 
i need some more ideas on other things that it might be. and will it be ok to run with the balance shaft in but just dont have the belt on it?
 
have you checked to make sure the valves aren't bent? like ran a compression test or something of that sort? you could have slipped timing a notch or 2, in which the car may still run (shitty) and you could have bent a valve or two but not know it by looking at the head. run a compression test.
 
My son's '90 GST was making noise and shredded an balance shaft belt. It turned out the noise was the rear balance shaft bearing. It spit out the bearing and lost oil pressure and ended up siezing the exhaust cam and bending all the exhaust valves. I would check it out before you drive it anymore.
