Well, if your timing belt has slipped, you could have bent valves? There's so fine a line between survival and death. One or two teeth perhaps, but who knows after that. I have seen damn few that slipped and survived. Maybe 4 or 5 in my life.

If it's timing, it's because it was initially set incorrectly. The car didn't "die" after it was running -- it has never ran properly since it had the head replaced
possibly cam 180* out?
 
Checked timing: good.
Check compression: 0-0-?-?-timingbelt
Checked 3 and 4, but not 1 and 2.. figured they're zero, too
