Over the weekend I installed an evo III 16G on my 2G. Way back when I installed my exhaust, I put the wrong bolt (too long) in a bracket that holds the small water line that goes to the oil filter housing in place. Luckily at the time, I couldn't seem to get to it and didn't tighten it down. Well this time I was able to get to it and tightened it down, poking a hole in the large aluminum water pipe that runs across the front of the engine to the water pump. I was thinking about wrapping a hose clamp across the hole, and patching it the rest of the way with some epoxy type stuff I saw that is supposed to fix leaks like this. Think this will work? Any other ideas?

Is the water in this pipe coming from or going to the water pump? If it's going to, will it be under less pressure that the rest of the cooling system?

If I have to replace the pipe, do I need to take the water pump off to do it? How many brackets hold it to the engine block? I can see one under the exhaust manifold that I think I can get to without pulling the turbo off.

Thanks in advance.

It's nothing to hard to replace. You don't have to completely unbolt the turbo but you do the manifold and power steering stuff. There are 3 bolts I believe that hold it on. It pulls right out of the waterpump but be sure to replace the seal in the waterpump. If you want a temp. ghetto fix you would always buy a peice of rad. hose that will fit over the water pipe and just hoseclamp it on both sides. Don't recommend but it's a quick fix if you need one.

When I was turboing my 420A ( custom kit ) I had to cut the water pipe that goes across the motor , because the turbo just missed clearing it. So I did the quick fix.....cut it and ran rad hose across it help up fine for months up until I sold the car. So I'm sure if you need the quickest/cheapest fix that this should hold for a couple of months at lease. good luck.

Is that definitely the way it is on a 2G, or are you referencing a 1G? From what I remember when I could see it better, it was one piece and stuck into the water pump at one end, and split into a Y at the other and went into the block. It seemed like the water pump may have to come off in order to get the block ends to pull out. It's the side where it sticks into the block that I punctured.

On the 1g and 2g there are 2 bolts that have to come off. 1 is right behind the turbo under the exhaust manifold, and the second ties down to the the starter bolt right under the t-stat housing. It is a tight fit to get out, so I ended up just pulling the manifold bolts and the water line slides right out. You wont have to remove the water pump.

Are there o-rings that go in the engine block side as well?
At the water pump there is an o-ring you should change. On the other end the radiator hose ataches to it. no o-ring on that end.

I finally got the pipe off. On the non-water pump end of mine, it Y'd, 1 to a hose (goes to heater core I think), and the other into the thermostat housing. I had to unbolt the thermostat housing from the head in order to get the pipe out, and there was another O-ring there.

What should I use to seal the thermostat housing to the head? It didn't look like there was a gasket there. RTV silicone type stuff?

There should be a gasket on it. any part store should have it for cheap, but be very careful tightening the thermo housing as they crack very easy.
