i can't use first gear unless i put it into 1st while slowing down before i stop. if i am stopped already and try to put it in, it won't go in gear adn will grind back out. what could this be? someone told me to try and adjust the cables at the transmission. how would i do this and would it work?

So it goes into all the other gears fine? When did it start? New clutch? Sounds like the clutch isnt disengaging all the way. Does the car role forward a little when you try to put it in first while stopped?

ok here is the deal with the car. guy told me that a new tranny went in @ 60k. the car now has 80k on it. it also has had a new clutch put in recently. he told me that it did it before but got worse when the new clutch went in. all other gears are fine. just happens with first. any ideas?

yeah he probably didn't get the flywheel resurfaced or it wasn't done correctly. If this is the case then you have two options. One take it apart and get it done correctly or if you don't have the time or money you can hold the clutch to where it just starts to engage and press the gas and let the engine rev to about 3 or 4 grand, This will take some of the material off the clutch and allow it to disengage better. However it will also shorten your clutch life, but not by much if it will go in all gears but first now. Make sure the car isn't in gear when you do this, if you decide to. Let us know what you decide and what happens, Good Luck

hmmm...........well i was thinking about getting a new clutch and flywheel anyway. so you don't think it has anything to do with the tranny. because i have the money to either get the good clutch and flywheel or rebuild the tranny. not enough for both.

that sounds like a clutch adustment. if it has a new tranny and doesnt grind into any other gear its probably not the synchros.
Try bleeding the slave, and master cylenders of the clutch and get new fluid. also..adjust the clutch pedal itself to get a different engage point. it sounds like your clutch isnt fully engaged when putting it in first. try pressing it down 3/4th of the way down and see it that works. good luck man. :thumb:

If you have to put it in first gear before you start the engine and the pedal engages the clutch when barely off the floor, I would say a good old bleeding is in order for you.

Good Luck
