1992 Plymouth Laser RS

ok heres the problem.

day 1: car at a stop stalls, restart and it stalls again, won't stay on unless i give it gas.
(it's an automatic by the way, 1g non-turbo 2.0)

day 2: stays on at idle but after it warms up it surges (revs from like 750rpm to 1500rpm, over and over). Only when I am stopped.

day 3: now I got rough idle and sounds and feels like a miss until i drive about 20 or 30mph it seem to be ok but might still be there.

here is what i checked so far:

TPS - good and adjusted to be in spec.

new plugs - NGK and gapped to 0.039

ISC - both coils resistance all good (took off car and plugged back into harness, shaft only move like 1/8 of an inch in and out. IS THIS NORMAL??? )

I will be checking EGR valve, ignition wires, coil pack, oxygen sensor.

WHAT COULD IT BE????? PLEASE ANY HELP WILL BE APPRECIATED....

This car only has 66,000 original miles on it.

Fuel filter new, plugs new, wires replaced 5 months ago when i bought the car but replaced with cheap wires. I will replac them tonight to see if it helps. Would that cause all the idle problems though?

I forgot to say earlier that there is NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON.

update

New plug wires
Checked coil pack and its good
Front O2 sensor good
I dumped injector cleaner in and dry gas (should do wonders for O2 sensor huh? :) )

I noticed I have poor gas mileage since this problem started.

The studdering is only low rpm related. Could a vacuum leak cause this? Bad EGR valve maybe? Fuel Preasure regulator?

HELP????

Anyone have these problems????

Fuel rail pulled off and cleaned injectors and still have the problem. Time to take it to a mechanic and let them deal with it. I just think my ECU is bad.

ill check it but i dont think that will cause poor gas mileage, studdering or bad idle but i'll check it. I checked everything else.

Guys my car just started doing this... when I come off throttle the car will backfire sometimes... The Exhaust note has changed and the car is really loud and raspy at idle.

No codes from the ecu ...like when my coil pack went the misfire codes will show up.

Nothing from the ecu now. I have the same low idle issue as posted about above... The car has good power... it just acts odd when at idle.

I am clueless

this is happening on my 96 420a NT I just had the timming belt change at 120k 2 months ago...

one more question... could a burned out cat cause this? My car is not stalling like the post above... it gets close but it seems to stay on since the rmp seems to stay up around 800... and as I stated no power lost at all...

When my car backfired the loud and very heavy thump came from the middle of the car and not the back.
This is so crazy... Thanks in advance!!!

Must be nice to find a problem. My ECU caps. aren't leaking. Damn car. What the hell could my problem be.

I am having the same problem with my 90 N/A!!!!!! I have checked everything, the only ideas i got left are many be my fuel pump is going and its sending uneven pessure. SOME ONE PLEASE HELP US!!!! My motor won't even let me rev past 4k and when I am crusing at 60 the car is just shaking to pieces.

I got the same problem going on with my 2.0L N/T Eclipse. I found out that the two coils have high resistance so im guessing its the ISC that went bad. Ill be changing that soon.

The car finally displayed an engine code...

The error is P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirc Flow
Incufficient Detected.

Did you check to see if your EGR is working properly? Maybe your EGR is clogged as in the code it states "Flow Insufficient Detected". Try testing your EGR and see if it is working properly before changing it though.

My vote is the Ignition Control Stepper (ISC), the fluctuation in your rpm is the best symptom to show that that is the cause. When your ISC goes your cars RPM with bounce back and forth from around 900RPM-1800RPM and back again, kinda like you are stepping on the gas and letting of, stepping on and letting off and so on. I would get that changed fast b/c if left unchanged it has been known to lead to ECU malfunctions which are very pricey, look at it this way, spend around $250 on an ISC or $1200 on a new ECU.

Well I am having similar problems with the idle issue. Except that everytime that I step on the throttle the car emits smoke for the breather valve on the head and about a week ago my dipstick was pushed out and there was oil on my hood. What is going on?

Check your PCV. It may be clogged and may need to be changed.

Correct gap for a turbo dsm: (0.028 to 0.031)

Correct gap for a non turbo dsm: (0.039 to 0.043)

He mentioned that his 92 Plymouth Laser RS is Non Turbo.

I read his post again and I didn't see the non-turbo part. You're probably right though.
