I got the new head on and was checking comopression witgh only one plug connected and it ran, was not expecting it too though, Aside from the 2k idle and ticking noise it ran great. I know the head is new and will tick awhile before it's broken in, and my timing, and most of the vac lines were off, which is probly why I had a 2k idle, I['m just happy the head gasket sealed and it's running,

now for the questions Is it okay to leave the rubber piece that goes around the engine mount and on the inside of the t-blet cover off, because I can't get it to stay on, Also the timing belt bolt closest to the AC comp is broken off will that hurt anything, the cover is still tight there. Is the splash sheid necessary, and how much slack should the alt, water pump belt have? Also how much should the power steering have?

thanks Derek

^^^^I wouldn't recomend it but I have mine off as well. There is the possibility that something the size of a washer could get in there, kill your belt and bend your valves so you are running a little more risk but I figure the odds are in my favor (as long as I am a little careful when I am under the hood.

^^^^It should be fine as long as the cover is still tight.

^^^^Which splash sheild?

and how much slack should the alt, water pump belt have? Also how much should the power steering have?

^^^^^I try to make them just tight enough. Not too tight or it will stress the belt. Not too loose or it will slip. ;)
Sorry I haven't used specs for belts in a long time. I think they are posted in a faq here or vfaq.com.

thanks, once I get a timing light I will time it, and them can drive it. It only took 4months and two cars to get it running. Actually I found a 90 red laser from a friend that needed a t-belt and new head. I did my research and found mitch "Suparata" from engintecs to build my head and order new EVO mani, and the other parts needed for the t belt swap. That was back in June or July. As I slowly pulled the head on the laser it took about 1-2weeks, then I sent it out. It took a while, but I would not have anyone else build a head for me. Once I got it I was preping the laser for the install and had to find a few parts in the junk yard. As I was leaving they brought a new car in. To my surprize it was a black 1990 eclipse AWD just like my old talon I love black...anyway it was a 5 speed and the talon was an auto. I asked if it was for sale and they didn't know if it had a title. Next day they find the title and say it's mine for 600. I looked under the hood and saw the belt was off so the head was junk, but bought it anyway. After getting the glass and other parts from the junk yard for free it was complete. It was a good thing I didn't put the new head on th laser as I needed it for my eclipse. when I pulled this head it only took 1-2 days and have it running in 2weeks(timing belt took a week itself to get right) I just need to time it now and hopefully drive it tomarrow. this is my third DSM and still have the laser, but sold the talon which I fully regret and always will it's hard to beleave, but I had less problems with that car then my other 3 (cj-5,rx-7,capri,mustang) I'm only 18 and had my first DSM at 15-16 and plan to build cars someday for a living and this only helps. It's so true they turn you into mechanics wether you want to be or not, in my case I have always loved cars beginning with the mustang and jeep.

Anyway I thought it would be cool to tell how I got my third DSM.

thanks Derek
