1994 Ford Explorer (Exploder) 4x4

Hey guys, I just purchased a '94 Exploder for my wife to drive. But, I can't get the 4wd to kick in. The push button will illuminate, but it doesn't engage. It also has the automatic locking hubs missing.... I don't understand that. The Exploder drives fine, just won't go into 4wd. Can you guys give me an idea what I should do??? Thanks

hey there.. kind of a weird site to post problems with your explorer on, but I have an idea what the problem might be. I have a 1995 GMC Jimmy 4x4, and have the same issue. It is a push button 4WD, and the button will illuminate, but only 1 tire drives still. I've heard the common problem for this has to do with the transfer case or a stelenoid going out. My 4 Low still works, so I'm thinking the stelenoid. That is really all I know. If you find anything, please post it on here, as your fix will likely be the same as mine.

i had a 94 explorer and the 4x4 was messed up too, didn't engage even when the button was pressed..sold it though, guess its a cmmon problem. I did try to have it fixed at a garage once and it was total crap..it would engage but make enormous sounds and the turning was all messed up.

check the solonides (should be in a repair manual), hope those are it

Hey Guys, thanks for the info. I got the 4wd to work. It's engaging now, I just have to get some hubs now so I'll have power up front. I know that this isn't and Exploder site, but I assume some of You alls expertise isn't just in DSM's. Thanks again
