Missing

My car has started missing badly. At idle the rpms are all over the place and the car almost dies. Ive replace the plugs and wires with regular ngks and still no improvement. Car is also running really rich and I can smell gas. I assume this is just a coincidence, but, ever since this problem started my check engine light has no longer been on. Could the problem be a valve not opening or something else? Any ideas appriciated. Car is 97 GS-T with bc, gauges, fmic, and exhaust.

There are number of things that could be causing this. Has your timing been checked lately? If your timing is off by only a tooth, it will cause your engine to run like complete CRAP (I know this from experience). Check the coil pack, and your power transistor (look up their factory specs and test them with a multimeter). And last but not least, DO a compression check. You may have bent a valve, which will also cause misfiring. If any of your cylinders have a zero compression, you'll need to fix it.

Sounds like idle surge. Check to see if you have any vac leaks. This link might help you out a bit. And as far as smelling gas. It could end up being one of your fuel injector insulators. That would case a vac leak and you to smell gas.

Update: I checked the compression and its 165 across all 4 cylinders. Now I guess I've just got to check the coil, and timing. I dont know if its idle surge, because it happens throughout the entire rpm range.

Changed fuel filter hoping that it was the problem. But still no improvment.

Well I finally solved the problem, so maybe it can help some others. After replacing and testing many things, it turns out my center honeycomb had come loose. I found it crushed and rattling around in the intake. Put a new one in, and it solved all my problems.
