Hi and good day to all. I have this problem with my 4g63 non-turbo 1G Galant that I hope some one can help shed some light on.
My problem is this. My idle cant seem to make its mind up where it wants to settle. First of all this is NOT an erratic idle like an idle surge. From one stop light to another, my idle plays in the range of 750rpms (where i believe its supposed to be set at) to 1000 rpms. It idles steady at about 800 rpms right before i start driving and on the next stop light, when i put the clutch in, it idles at 1000 rpms. This is the case WITHOUT the a/c running. With the a/c on, the engine oftenly stutters (about 550 rpms) when i hit the brakes to take a corner; more so at night since I have my headlights turned on. I tried adjusting the base idle screw so this does not happen but then a few minutes later, i find my idle to be at 1400rpms or something. So basically, from stop-start to the next stop-start, i get different idle values.
I also have noticed that my engine does not "idle-up" when the a/c is switched on or when the steering wheel is turned. I have checked my ISC and all terminals (except 3-4) are giving me 30-31 ohms. I have also cleaned out my throttle body (off the car) and have also tried setting my TPS to .9kohms and 1.1kohms and still have the same problem. Idle switch seems to be set correctly and the thermal sensor right beside the temperature guage sender has been replaced as well. Oh yeah, at low rpms in first of second gear, if i were to give it some gas, the car would buck forward and back and would have to give it some clutch to help it through. Plus, my exhaust smells extremely rich!!
I had read in a different post about a reed switch hooked up to the speedometer. Can this be my problem? I can hear a ticking sound from the back of my instrument cluster. I thought it was just my speedometer cable about to snap so i never gave it much thought.
I would really appreciate any input since I've been trying to rectify this problem for the past 4 months and still no joy. I've read through hundreds of threads hoping to find someone with the same problem.
Cheers for your time and input.
