well I've tried everything I know here so Im gonna shoot his problem to you guys!
I recently got a 91 gs turbo ..
ran good for 3 weeks (with rough Idle of course )
Now on the way to work the other morning car started /ran good ! half way to the job the car starts to miss at idle and on the gas. so im thinking to myself wires or plugs .. .. I bought some wires and plugs (gapped at .031) replaced the wires and still same problem . The reason why i changed the wires was because 1. they were old 2. I noticed a melted part on the #2 wire and on the spark plug cover .. .. I them tested the coil pack yes it was bad .. grabbed another one and still same problem ..I am at a loss here I think I went over everything in the ignition system ...
also the plug/wire that was giving me the thought of that problem .. It looks wet and it is blacker than the other plugs I put in ..
the compression was checked whe I got the car .. 161 +/- 1 across all cylender .. from what I can rember ..
here is a little history on the car ..
1991 eclipse gs turbo
diy mods include honey comb removal(small one )
diy BCS restrictor mod
open air can mod
the cars computer is out of a 90 gst to get it running untill the new one comes from a 91 gst
thats al of the mods and some history

also I belive it not to have a blown head gasket for the following reasons
1. Not smoking at all
2. not over heating at all . replaced thermostat w/ 180 degree .. also I have a greddy temp guage and I never read over 86deg cel
I also replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pump tests good

am I missing anything to check , am i going about this the wrong way ? ..
or does anyone have any good sugestions to solve my problem here ..
thanks in advance!
greg b

OK what i have found was a domino of problems here .. lemmie start from the beginning
1.Bad wire on cyl 2///
2. #2 on coil pack blew ..
3. now either a burnt valve or i have lost the valve seat on that cyl somewhere
We did another compression check and bamm anly 50ls on that cylender .. hmm i say ..
rechecked the timing it was perfect dead on the money w/ marks and on the cam sensor !
what i figure went wrong when the coil/wire blew it sent a surge .. thats the only thing i can think of since the car wasn't running lean and the timing was on the $$$

Now monday we are going to do a static test on that cyl.. and do a leak down test as well
anyhow .. i hope it is a valve and not a seat .. either way the head is getting ported pallished and reworked .. along w/ new head gasket , head studs from ARP and well might as well port match everything else as well (intake manny and exh manny ..
what is driving us nuts is what caused it ..
1. a problem gone horrably wrong
2. or was it just fatigue ..
I will post more as I know more on the issue at hand once i pull the head

but anther funny thing is the miss goes away after 2600 rom .. hmmmm any thoughts

well here is the major problem but in the process of being fixed !~!
Yanked the head off and low and behold a cracked exhaust valve .. no wonder i didnt have compression .. hmm ..
I have included some pics of the problem .. and also for those who were wondering .. I didnot jump timing ! thats cool ..
Now i managed to break the T- Belt tensioner sooo .. I am still down but not out
ty for those who tried to help out

Well greg... if I were going to break a valve.... THAT'S EXACTLY how I'd do it. :D

p.s. The MLS headgasket doesn't leave that kind of a pattern on the head so uh..... why aren't you running one?

there are 2 refrence maks on the 4g63..
1. the DOWEL pins face straight up .. and then the 2 closest marks face each other ..
thats how the timing is suposed to be on the cams .. ..
it is also listed in VFAQS

The 420A is supposed to have the marks lined up closest to each other as well. However, the dowel pins will be opposite. One up and one down. Then on the back side the cam gear has markings indicating that it can be used on the chrysler 2.4L as well.

Glad you got the MLS now. Hopefully that will keep other problems from arising later on. Sorry to see the busted valve.

You have to change two wires on the ECU harness when using a 90 ECU on a car that is not a 90 click here to find out how. :dsm:

yea but unfortunitly that was not the problem and now i have a socketed ecu out of a 91 .. whew .. what a week it has been .. ..
yea doug the 2gnt is gone .. unfortunitly .. but i got this one to play around w/ since i switched jobs and have a work truck now .. it frees up major cash and well dont have to put many miles on the car . also i can tear it down and not be rushed LOL

ps .. doug well to keep confusion down how do i change my user name or is that set????

You're married to the name now. Cuts down on mutliple sign on names for a single person. If you go to site feedback, you'll find a couple of threads dating months back with people asking the same question. No dice.

Glad you made some improvements over there. Sorry to hear the nt go but I'm sure you'll find somewhere to put all that NT money now. :D Talk with ya later.

Thanks for the info there Doug . ! !
