hi all,

A few months ago I had a problem with battery arcing on my '94 TSi. When the engine wasn't on and I would play the radio, the dome lights would dim, and when I would drive down the road and then apply the brake the headlights and dash would dim, and frequently the radio would cut out. I took it to Sears figuring i needed a new battery, but the tech there told me that the battery was putting out power just fine, and that the only thing i could do to fix the arcing was find to try to find a battery that was physically smaller so it wouldn't be so close to the hood, or to find some rubber and place that over the battery. I looked for fixes online without much luck, and didn't find any insulation designed to be mounted on the hood, so I ended up buying a rubber box thingie from Ikea for $2 and cut it up so it would fit over my battery. Now everything is functioning properly, but is there a fix for this problem that would look less cheesy? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

1) Push the battery towards the rear of the car.

2) Buy a smaller battery.

3) Electrical tape on the hood / over the terminal.

4) On my 1G anyway, there was a plastic cover over the positive terminal on the battery, I had removed it for my fuel pump rewire, but ended up cutting a slot for the rewire to fit nicely on it. I'd junkyard around for one.
