Common Mistakes and Misconceptions of DSM Newbies
If you haven't already performed all the modifications
found on this page, keep your questions limited to the
Newbie Forum and do
keyword searches until you've acquired sufficient experience with your own car. Read how to use the
Search Feature effectively.
Some helpful tips for using the forums:
READ AND FOLLOW ALL THE RULES
Failure to comply with the rules may result in suspension or termination of your DSMtuners membership without warning. It is your responsibility to know the rules and respect them at all times. If our Moderating team deems your participation on our site as inappropriate for any reason, you can and will be banned without warning - even if you haven't directly broken a rule.
BEFORE YOU POST A NEW THREAD, be sure another member has not already posted the same exact topic. You should
Search the Forums to see if there is already a discussion taking place on the topic you're about to post. Also be sure you've read all of the resources listed in Rules. Nobody wants to see the same topics posted repeatedly by different people. If you don't have first-hand experience installing any of the Stage 1 upgrades
found on this page, you should be posting most of your performance questions in the
Newbie Forum.
READ ALL OF THE RESOURCES found in the Tuning Guide and Parts Catalog linked in the top navigation of this site. And when you're done with that, browse through the forums on this site and read through as many discussions as you possibly can - entering keywords in the Search bar up top for specific subjects that you want to learn about. Asking questions without doing any research to see if it's a common question will start you out on the wrong foot with many members in the community. If you're new to DSMs, post your questions in the
Newbie Forum until you learn which topics are commonly discussed.
Here's a short list of frequently answered questions.
PERFORMANCE IS KING HERE - asking questions about body kits and loud blow off valves will give the impression that you're not here for performance. This site was built to encourage modifying DSMs to go faster, not look or sound faster. Though we have a forum available for these types of non-performance questions, we ask that you make an effort to keep your questions and discussions performance related. If you're not here to learn how to make your DSM perform better, we ask that you consider using other forums better suited to your needs.
TURBO QUESTIONS - your first question will likely be what turbo to upgrade to, even if you're not ready to upgrade it (and most members aren't). We recommend typing in keywords in the Search bar at the top to find discussions about specific turbos. We are very strict on how turbos are discussed simply because too much incorrect information gets passed around, and vendor competition usually plays a negative role in the decision making process. To find out how to get the info you're looking for on turbos,
click here and read these tips. If you don't have firsthand experience installing any of the Stage 1 upgrades
found on this page, you shouldn't be asking about turbos yet anyway, and should be posting most of your engine performance questions in the
Newbie Forum.
SUPPORT OUR SITE by shopping our Parts Catalog and visiting the partners that are listed on our
Sponsors page . We've got some really good vendors that can provide you with any DSM part you'll need to make your car perform better. Check them out, give them your business, and thank them for supporting our site.
What NOT to ask in the forums:
- If I bolt on "x" part, how much power will I gain?
- I want a 10-second daily driver- what parts will I need? which turbo?
- What should my first mods be?
- Which turbo is the best?
- Which is better - FWD or AWD?
- Why do people here not like ricers?
- Isn't the Fast & the Furious the best movie ever?
- Are altezza tail lights cool?
- How do I make my BOV louder?
- Should I buy a DSM or a Honda?
- Why are people in "X car forums" so ignorant?
These questions are either very easy to find if you looked through the resources found in the Rules, or will draw negative reactions from the performance community. Once you learn more about DSMs, you'll begin to understand what we mean.
Signatures & Avatars:
Signatures will be removed/edited if they do not comply with the
Sig & Avatar Rules.
Keeping all this in mind should make your DSM experience a good one. Ignoring it may get you booted from the forums.
