compression test question

Is it necessary to have the intake manifold, throttle body bolted in order to do a compression test?

ive always done mine by removing a spark plug one at a time,
then sticking the tester down in the hole, and bumped the switch 3 times.

Just have the throttle plate open so it can easily pull air into the cylinders.

No, you can do a test without the intake even bolted on. Remove all 4 plugs so that the engine spins easier.

Remove all spark plugs, install tester do not tighten to much, remove engine fuse, press throttle (if still installed) and crank for a few seconds.
