Leak in power steering rack lines


So just recently, I took my car out for a drive and it started smoking while I was steering. What happened is one of the two metal lines on the steering rack rusted out and was spraying out right onto the exhaust. The system will not hold fluid because it will all just spray out. Is it possible to replace these lines or do I need a whole new steering rack. Also, will a fwd rack work on my awd?

Yeah THEDSMGRAVEYARD could help you locate more lines, but if you want to DELETE the WHOLE system, personal oppinion of course. If your intrested let me know and I'll tell ya what you need to do to get this done cheap, and easy, plus adds a little bit of HP as well as gives you a work out. It's a win win situation.

You can replace the lines.

You can order them from mitsu. (if they still make them), you can go to a junk yard and pull the power steering system out of the car, you can swap in a manual steering rack from a Laser n/t, or you can loop the lines.

Well since I'm going to be daily driving this car, I'd like to keep the PS. How hard are the steering racks to switch out on these cars. From the looks of it from under the car, it looks pretty difficult.

Well that all depends what tools you have. It'll take a few hours at least. you know the basics, not really hard just cramped space and time consuming.

Here's a thread I posted when I found them leaking on my 1g awd I ended up replacing them with good lines from a friends rack. there is some good info on that thread.

Thanks that thread is very helpful. Did you take off your rack to change your lines out.

Ok well I read now that did have to. But... did you have to remove the transfercase or driveshaft?
