Question

car starts but dies when given gas

ok i looked at the other topics but no help ### not the same... sorry. first i have a 1991 eagle talon tsi awd that i bought for 1500 and it has a few mods but im not sure on all of them. well the problem is that the car starts and idles alittle but if you give it gas and try to drive it dies. it started when the guy i bought it from let some idiot over boost it and when he did that it popped off one of the intercooler pipes and died on them well they towed it home and after that the problem started. the guy checked the compression and he said that was fine he checked the valve sprigs there ok he checked to make sure the intercooler pipes were all on and tightened. he thinks that it might be that an injector came out but i dont think that could be possible ### the car wouldnt start and you could see the gas fly everywhere. im not sure what it could be. ### help. thanks

Do a boost leak test, it's happened to many of us before. Hopefully (probably) that's all it is.

EDIT: A link might help sorry. IC Pipe Tester

how long did the system stay pressurized? Did you use soapy water? You could be running super rich and flooding it out, but this is most commonly caused by a boost leak.

well i havent ran a fuel pressure test because the guy i bought it from checked the fuel pump and filter before i bought it and did a compresion check and everything was fine and as for it being flooded i dont think that could be it because it starts and idles fine when it warms up but if you try to drive it just dies no sound vibration or anything out of the ordinary just dies. and as for cel lights im not sure what you mean by that so i couldnt really tell you.

Check your mass air flow. The plug might be lose or disconected.

Beat me to it. Yea definately check your maf. Does the car rev freely when its warmed up or does it sound like its breaking up? Dumb question but do you have gas in the car, Ive seen a few 1gs with faulty gas gauges.

I say the same. MAF could be the issue. I have done it quite a few times where I put my intake tract back together and that little plug doesn't get reconnected before closing the hood. It happened to me last week upgrading my GFs G35 intake.

Word of advice, ALWAYS check the most basic things first. It can save you a lot of time and mental anguish

My friend had the same problem in his Probe GT with a swapped KLZE. It would start in neutral but anytime he went to throw it into gear it would shut off. He rewired EVERYTHING and it fixed the problem. Not saying you need to do something this drastic but that is what he did and it's good now. Good luck man.

i know if ## iat (intake air temp) is reading to hot then it will do this. the iat is in the maf, so i guess you will have to search on here to see if theres a way to check that.

well now the CEL is on and the car will only idle @500 rpm and it stays there even if i try to floor the gas. its running really rich according to the air\fuel ratio gauge. and i thinks its out of timing not to mention that the oil pump is not pumping oil into the engine and the reason i know this is because when i put the valve cover back on it was dry and when i took it off it was still dry and so was the oil line to the valve cover so we ran the car with the oil line off and no oil came out at all so something is wrong there. and the turbo clicks alittle but really bad and it does spool and run when idling but i know i will have to replace that soon.
