Hey im taylor I'm a noob. I'm not noob with cars but noob to the dsm world, I've always wanted one and recently found a great 95 tsi awd for 1200 in near mint condition (end clutch was out and the guy got a 3200 dollar transmission quote hehe). I'm stoked to get on the scene and have already met some dsm's in my area so I hope I'm not the guy out there asking "what kindof intake and exhaust do I need for a t3/t4 turbo" or something. I've been floating around the forum for about two weeks so I thought I'd finally make a post.

I'm new here. I live in North Dakota, I'm 20 years old. My name is Josh. Me and my girlfriend both have DSM's, I have a Talon and she has an 02 Eclipse GS. I am looking mainly for her 2002 GS to get it into car shows around the state and area. Glad to join the site finally and hopefully I can do some business here with people.

Hey there,
Just found the site and love it. I just got my 99 GST a couple of weeks ago. It already has some mods done to it. Bigger turbo, intercooler, Piggyback tuner, Full exhaust, Lowered with 5 way adjustable shocks on it, and a short throw shifter to name a few.
Definately the funnest car I have owned to date. It needs to have the front bumper cover painted but that is no issue for me as I work in a bodyshop so that will come in a couple of weeks.
Here is a couple of pics, Some of you may remember it as the owner before me told me about this site and was on it. I dont know if he posted pics though.

hello
My name is Sean, I'm 29, live in PA just outside Philly. I know this might start a ruckus but I got into tuning through my Honda Accord. I had her for 2 years, broke 200k miles, and learned allot about auto mechanics. I recently purchased my first DSM and although its been nothing short of a nightmare, I am dedicated to her and have big plans. But along with those big plans come big questions and thats why I am here.
I'll post more on how i got into the DSM scene, where I stand a.t.m., and where I'd like to go with my 2g, but for now, just saying hi!

My intro into the world that is DSM
OK, having owned my DSM for 3 weeks now, and being a member of this forum for 3 days, I figured its a good time to tell my story. My 94 Accord Coupe hit 200k miles and I figured it was time to 'upgrade'. I found this beautiful 97 Eclipse RS with 88k miles, awesome body kit, lots of nice engine upgrades, including a turbo, something i could only dream of with my f22 accord. Basically it was everything i wanted my accord to be, but would never of had the money. so i figured if I'm truly going to get into this, this would be the best bet ### its already started.
So i go to the small dealership that has this car listed, look it over, test drive it, have my dad who has been a mechanic for 30+ years look it over. we both agreed it seems like a good deal so I buy it. And thats where the curse began. i don't even get 25 miles down the road and everything just shuts off. i pull off to the side of the road and smoke just comes pouring out from under the hood and i smell something electrical burning. i open the hood and find that whoever owned it before me had ran the power wire for the capacitor/amp in the hatch ran it ridiculously close to the head. the insulation melted and the wire grounded out, shutting everything down and draining the battery. i cut the wire off and drain the remaining juice from the cap. i get a ride to a BJ's club store and get a new battery, go back and jump it. she starts back up and i go again, headed for home which is about a 40 min drive from where i was. I get home without incident, put my plates on it, and head for work. i get to a gas station to fill up and i realize the temp gauge is pegged past the H mark and i can hear the coolant boiling. i let it sit for like an hour to cool off then i head off to work. i don't even get to the next exit down the highway and its pegged again. unfortunately there is all kinds of construction going on so i had nowhere to pull off. i try to limp it the rest of the way but 2 exits before the one i get off on, it back fires, stutters and i quick shut it off and cost it the rest of the way to my work. i let it cool off for like 2 hrs and try to start it again. nothing. no door ajar dinger, no dash lights, no fuel pump whir, nothing. so i start looking at fuses under the hood and i find a blown fuse for the ignition switch. i run to the auto parts store up the road and get a fuse, replace it and now i get all the lights and dingers and whirs and the motor even turns over, just won't start. so i figure out that the coil pack isn't making spark ### i pull a plug stick a screwdriver up it, lean it against the valve cover and turn it over to see if it arcs. so i call a towing company and get it towed to the garage i get alot of the work i cant do myself done to have them give it a complete once over. leak down test, compression test, find and repair the problem causing it not to start, clean up some of the wiring in the engine bay, etc. so a week goes by and they tell me they narrowed it down to the crankshaft position sensor and that the leak-down and compression tests return nothing but catastrophic results. leaks out 3 of 4 cylinders on the exhaust side, 3 out of 4 cylinders hold only 90psi, but with oil those 3 will jump up to 140psi. but it runs. they tell me i should sell it while it runs and buy one of their cars. so that got me thinking, maybe they're just telling me this crap so i do sell my car because they are pissy i didn't buy one of theirs. to top that off, there are signs that the leak-down test was never done.
so heres where i stand. I paid 5k for an 88k miles 97 DSM eclipse rs that looks hella sweet but don't run right. I've driven it for maybe 1.25 hrs in the 3 weeks I've owned it. i spent 500 in parts and labor to get it running again, another 600 in parts to upgrade the cooling system, i have no idea and no record of what was done internally if anything to the motor, all i know is what i can see, and now i have a new project much more exciting (read: strenuous) then my accord, and a whole new learning experience just waiting to suck all my money out of me.
but what can i say, I'm a glutton for punishment especially from something as beautiful as she is.

This thread proves that you need to be forewarned when buying a used modded car. It's pretty risky because you don't know if your car was molested or not. It appears yours was.
Sounds like the guy tried to mod it, messed stuff up, and sold it.
My opinion.
Best of luck in coaxing her back to speed

No offense, but I have NEVER seen a car inperson that had any sort of Body kit or apperance mods done past wheels and a drop that was tooken care of.
They are out there but soon as I see a Kit and headlights and mirrors etc.. And esp when the hood dosn't line up.. Yeah bad car.
Next time search the Tech forum and find the first dsm buyers guide and follow that to the tee.
Compression test it yourself see what is going on.
But IMHO sell it. Buy a Stock car and mod it yourself, then you will know what is going on.
Best and only way I will ever recommend somone buying a DSM, unless they are fully mechincally inclined and love to repair and fix their car all the time.

A 30+ yr mechanic should have known this wasn't a good deal and stopped right there and walked away.

Regardless what's done is done - my suggestion would be do what you want. I don't want to preach to you or anything but for $5k you could have picked up a decently modded 4g63 model Eclipse. If you have the option of selling it then I'd sell it and try and pick up a GST or a GSX. Just my thoughts though, but if you want to stick it out and deal with it and have a 420aT then more power to ya. I personally would trust a 4g63T more than a 420aT especilaly seeing the condition the previous owner left it in. Stay strong bro it all gets better. My GST has been going good for a while now.. But can't say that about my GSX lol. Good luck bro

That sucks! If you can get it working correctly, try and sell it. This was just bad luck. Next time, like most have said, get a GST or GSX with the 4g63T engine. It's built to handle the extra power of a turbo. A lot of people run 20-25psi on the stock block without even opening it up. It has to be tuned correctly ofcourse. Try to get the next car as close to stock as possible. A lot of the modded turbo cars are done incorrectly or dogged out. A lot of times people find themselves spending all kinds of money just trying to get it to run correctly. Get it compression/leakdown tested before you buy next time. Also, come back on here and ask for more opinions before you purchase (Just to be extra safe!). Good luck.

this goes to show you that you can ONLY use NGK's.
anyway, Take Twistaye's advice. Grab you a real DSM. i dont think you'll get your 5k back unless you sell it to some ricer kid and convince him it's a good deal. make sure he has rich parents

on the upside of things........that car does look DAMN SWEET.......also 420a engines are a dime a dozen....pick a decent one up from a parts recycler for $500 complete long block or pull it yourself for $100 from a junkyard. Or part the car out....I will take the front for sure! how about some more pics?
