Does anyone know if a broken speedometer cable will cause the ECU to throw an error code 24? Or does this error code mean there's a possibility that my speedometer cable is good and it's a faulty Vehicle Speed Sensor (reed switch) that is causing the error code, and the speedometer not to work?

Before I spend money unnecessarily on a new speedometer cable, I'm trying to figure out if simply buying and installing a new cable would fix my non-functioning speedometer, or if something else besides the cable (i.e. the VSS) can actually be the problem.

BTW, it's a 5 spd manual, and not the auto tranny. Thanks in advance.

The Vehicle Speed Sensor might be what is making your spedo not work. So find it and test it to make sure it works.

Not very likely. The VSS is a simple reed switch operated by a magnet on the speedometer shaft and on a 1G the actual speedometer gauge is mechanical driven by the cable. The VSS signal is for the ECU and other computers.

If the speedometer isn't working either pop the gauge cluster and check that the cable is turning or pop the end out of the trans and hook the end up to a drill to see if you can make the speedometer work. The failure could be in the trans, the coupling between the speed sensor and the cable, the cable, or the speedometer.

Hmmm .... if it's not likely that the VSS is faulty, then a broken speedometer cable CAN in fact cause the ECU to throw an error code 24?
Just trying to clarify this, because my speedometer isn't working and I'm getting that error code.

What I said was that isn't likely a bad VSS is going to cause the speedometer to fail. Where it's 100% likely a broken speedometer or cable will cause a VSS failure. Sorry if that wasn't obvious.

Unless the VSS exploded and jammed up the gears in the gauge the reed switch is magnetic coupled to the input to the speedometer and out of the way of the moving parts.

OK - Thanks for clarifying that steve.

I'll check it out and update this thread when I do. :thumb:
