Gray's Status...

I work at the lab in Water Works, and we don't forcast Fluer being open until at least Friday or Saturday, which means there's a good chance Gray's will still be flooded by then.

We could be dead wrong because it's almost a week away, but I'll keep you all updated so we can change the pic location ahead of time if we need to. Of course that's assuming it's not raining on Saturday. Which it isn't supposed to be

Angry Reschedule / location change?

At this point, I'm sure most of you have heard that downtown is going under tonight and tomorrow. Saylorville is going to be overtopped sometime tonight, which is going to double the Des Moines River flow. On top of that, Thursday's storm is expected to hit both the Raccoon River and Des Moines River watersheds with upwards of 5 inches of rain. Flood stages are expected to be 6 ft higher than they were in 93.

Basically, a large part of downtown is going be under 3-6 feet of water this weekend, and most (if not all) southbound access into the city is going to be shut down.

Also, Gray's Lake is not opening until mid-next week at the earliest...

We've been really unlucky with our timing, and I for one suggest either moving to some location in West Des Moines, or rescheduling for next weekend...

Well, as stated, it's still a few days out.

Nadir, why don't you keep us posted, since you'll have easier access to info than the rest of us. I'd say that a decision needs to be made on Thursday night at the latest, to give us enough time to PM everyone and let them know, so keep that in mind.

A thought that crossed my mind was the massive parking lots at Jordan Creek... It's a bit further out, but it wouldn't be flooded. What do you guys think of that?

Also, downtown 6ft under?? Holy shit. Of course, we've known about the issues at Saylorville since 1993... so this wasn't outside of the realm of possibility with those issues having been unaddressed. I've also heard that IC isn't very far from flooding either...

Do me a favor everyone: PM me a phone number, preferably a cell phone, in case we need to reschedule. This way if we have to I can get a hold of everyone quickly.

Thanks,
Zach

I vote for a date change... Have the bridges in downtown were closed today and we are expecting 2-4 inches of more rain today through tomorrow. Also with the saylorville reservoir exceeded full capacity the cities water buffer no longer exists, so all extra water will translate into flooding.

sucks..

I 2nd the vote for a date change. Areas are flooding and shutting down here in CR, it's going to be a big hastle if anyone has to detour around flooding areas.

I'll be sure to check the areas around the parking garage from now until the day of the meet. If it's still something we'll be able to do I won't call it off. If you guys can't make it to this meet be sure to keep checking this website for the next meet. We'll continue to schedule meets as often as possible, being sure to give everyone enough time to take off work and be prepared. I plan on the next meet to be scheduled as soon as late July, but if this weekend's meet is not possible we'll reschedule a date sooner then July for the first meet.

After this first meet I will be starting a new thread for information on the next meet. This will help new people to the discussion by making it a little less confusing. I will post a link on this thread to the new thread also.

Thanks for those of you keeping yourself updated, it keeps the PMs I get with questions about the meet to a minimum.

The cruise to Gray's Lake seems impossible at this point. As of now we will all be playing it by ear because of the weather.

Thanks,
Zach

EVERYONE WHO IS ATTENDING: I need your phone number in order to get a hold of you easily if we need to reschedule this meet. PM me your name and number immediately. Thanks!

For what reason would that not happen?

Do you honestly think I am just trying to get people's information? I have better things to do with my time. The only reason I even ask for a number and the name is to get a hold of everyone quickly if we need to reschedule. If that's too much to ask from you after all the effort I've put into making this meet happen then it's not a problem to me. That just means you'll have trouble making it to the meet if we reschedule and I have no reason now to make the extra effort to get the information to you.

Thanks,
Zach

CURRENT UPDATE:

As of now no changes are being made to our plans, other than the cruise to Gray's Lake.

Why going to Gray's Lake is out of the plan:Video

Check my blogs for the information on the meet.

just pm'ed you my info.

Also, the garage on Grand should be fine, it's acess from the east and south into the city that I'm worried about. Those areas will be well under water, as the river is going to crest 6 feet over the levees and dikes there.

And IC is takin it in the ass right now.

I work downtown right across the street from the parking garage. I'm actually at work right now. Downtown is completely fine as of now. If you live in Des Moines making it to the meet shouldn't be a problem because of the weather. Like sax_man has said it's those of you out of Des Moines that could possibly have difficulties. The garage itself is not flooded and the top level where the meet will be held is certainly not going to be flooded. If it floods enough to have the top level of the parking garage to take on water, we'd all be in major trouble.

The only flooding downtown has been the Court Avenue district, which is right next to the river. The garage we will be meeting at is about 3 blocks north and 2 blocks west of the Court Ave. area.

Yeah, the Iowa River is draining sequentially, and now that the CF/WL area is draining, IC is gonna fill up. I'm gonna wager a guess that the Des Moines River is doing the same thing.

So far, I've heard that the spillways in Des Moines are still below their overflow points, and the levels should be dropping within the next few days. Hopefully we won't see downtown flooded for this weekend.

We'll see if I even get my car back tomorrow or not. If I don't, chances are slim that I will even make it, sorry to tell you. Unless you don't mind me showing up with a customers Toyota.

You're worried about them monitoring your phone calls yet you would show up in a customer's car...?

Customer would be driving it, he's an old friend of mine; separate business anyway.

We'd like to keep it just DSMs, but it's for the DSM Enthusiasts here in Iowa and the surrounding areas. So of course not all people that love DSMs will have their DSM at the time, or have it running, some of the guys coming sold theres already, but are coming out to check out what Iowa's DSM scene is like these days.

So there are a few people with out DSMs coming, but if at all possible we'd like to keep that to a minimum. You're surely welcome to go whatever you drive in.
