I work at a Porsche dealer, and we occasionally throw out Michelin Pilot Sport Cups off GT3's when there is little tread. I'm wondering if these can be shaved and given a second life for a track set?

For R-compound tires the tread depth typically doesn't matter. The tires number of heat cycles do matter. If these are coming off of mostly street driven porsches, they're probably perfect to use. If the car is tracked heavily, they probably don't have much grip left in them. (although they'd still be better than a street tire)

As I am a broke college student, I actually go to the 24/12 hour endurance races during their testing and tuning. Typically really expensive shops use tires barely and throw em out. I take em, and they still have a few heat cycles left, but as I am not going for a time, I use em until cords show. Free tires cant be beat, last set I got still had stickers half on.....I couldnt believe my eyes.

Exactly what I was hoping for, as I am going to the ALMS race at Road America this summer.

I used to do this when I worked for the lexus dealer back in the day. The IS300 owners would have two bad tires on the front and I guess they never heard of rotating and they would just get 4 new ones well that means two tires that weren't even on drive axles. But GT3 tires now that's a good setup :thumb:.
