I'm going to be buying new tires very soon and I need to decide what size to get.

Currently, I'm running 205/50/17 Bfg g-force tires. They may be me narrower than stock (they don't make them in stock size) but they served me very well.

This time around I'd like to get a wider tire, at least the stock 215/45 or 50/17 or hopefully 225/45/17.
The aspect ratio is perfect for my needs I'm just worried about the extra width being a detriment rather than a benefit.

I know that 225's will fit on the wheels, but would I want to make that purchase? Will I be loosing significant sidewall rigidity by using an over sized tire?
Does anyone have pictures of a 225 on an OEM GSX wheel?

I'm weary to just buy the stock size and not maximize my capabilities. Besides the 225/45/17's are cheaper :shhh:

Thanks in advance.

I think my front drivers side strut has finally blown. I noticed some oily fluid on the outside of it this last weekend. I have to go in for inspection some time this week or next. If it doesn't pass because of this, I'm thinking it's time for me to upgrade the suspension, since I've neglected doing anything to it for the last 2 years.

I've been shopping around trying to find a half decent setup for no more than about $650 to replace all 4 corners.

Consider:
97 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD
It's my DD - about 13k-15k miles a year.
I live in PA. The roads aren't the greatest.
I live in the country. Not everyone has a nice paved driveway. Sometimes I have to take dirt roads.
I autox several times a year. Nothing serious. Just bragging rights among friends.

As of right now, I'm looking at a set of Tokico Illuminas. The price for these is about $450 for the 4. I considered the HP model, but I'd like the adjustability.

My biggest debate has been what to run for springs. There is the Tokico kit that includes that shocks and springs for about $550. It says it drops about 1.75". Is this going to be too much for the occasional dirt road or driveway? I'm pretty sure I could live with it, because my sister's boyfriend drives an A4 that's slammed. He's still able to get around my area.

My other option for the springs would be either the H&R OE or Pro kit. They run for $240. The advertised drop on the OE are 1" and the Pros drop 1.3". It starts pushing me out of my price target, now at $690.

Or, I could stick with the springs that are on the car. As far as I know, they're still the original ones with 230,000 miles. I'm not sure that I'd see any gain if I stuck with those.

Suggestions of other setups to consider? Experience with the Tokico Illuminas and Tokico spring kit?
This thread speaks highly of them: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/hand...nsion-kit.html

As it sits now: (well, photo is actually as of a year ago)

When I bought my VR-4 it came with H&R springs and AGX's. Ride was poor and was really bad on the freeway. I immediately ordered some Konis and the ride quality drastically improved. At the same time I also replace all the upper strut mounts with KYB's. I also replaced the front endlinks and the bushings with Energy Suspension along with the sway bar bushing's in the front. As for the rear I could not find whole replacement endlinks so I just replaced the bushings with ES aswell. I took it to get aligned shortly after and they "checked" my suspension components and said everything appeared to be okay. Tires are wearing down but still have thread. Doesn't feel like the tire would be at fault for the feeling I am getting with the car.

I noticed that what did not go away was at higher speeds above 70mph the car's rearend feels very unsteady or the car as a whole feels to swerve from left to right, right to left, almost as if it were rocking side to side. I have driven it like this for well over 18months but I feel I need to get this issue taken care of as it is quite annoying at freeway speeds.

Few weeks ago I took a very hard left turn but was very well calculated and my rear end wanted to swing out on me. I counter steering and gained control. Under hard acceleration I do feel some vibrating and from what appears a bit of clunking on occasion and at a full right turn say going into a driveway when you are already on the right lane I will get clunking.

Just looking to find a solution.

Thanks

Let me start off with what I have now.

Let me start off with what I have now.

The car is a 1996 Eclipse GSX, automatic. Last year, I finally ditched my stock suspension setup to reduce wheel gap, and improve handling. I replaced the stock springs/struts with Koni yellow adjustable shocks, with Eibach Pro-kit springs.

My wheel/tire combo is 17 x 8 Rota Torque +35mm offset with 245/40/17 Kumho Ecsta MX tires.

I have stock swaybars, and pretty much stock everything else relating to suspension components.

Here is a picture, just to show the current ride height.

Now, here is what I want to change. My emphasis on this whole thing is STREETABLE. I live in Illinois and the roads are pretty terrible here. I cannot stand having to slam on the brakes everytime I see a bump, or taking the occasional explosive bang of hitting a bump on the highway, and the constant bumper scraping on driveways.... the car NEEDS to be higher up.

The lowered look on the Pro-kits looks cool and all, but I can't take the ride quality, I liked driving the car so much more on the stock suspension. And I drive with my Koni's on full soft.

Also, with my 245 tires with a 35 offset wheel, my tires rub on the quarter panels sometimes when the suspension bottoms out. I realize that has more to do with the wheel/tire choice, but I am just saying this because it never used to do this on the stock springs.

-------------------------------

Onto the questions.

I was thinking of just putting some stock springs back onto the car. If having wheel gap means that I get to enjoy the ride quality again, so be it.

Here is the question though. I am a suspension n00b so I have to ask this stuff. Should I mount my Koni shocks to some stock springs? What would that be like? Should I just totally go back to stock springs/shocks, and just upgrade to RM sway bars and install strut tower bars in order to get some of the handling improvement back?

What is the best way to go about this? The car needs to be higher up (and I cannot afford coilovers), so that is why I am just thinking of going to stock springs. Should I keep Koni's if I go to stock springs? Will the ride still be rough with the Koni's? Should I just go back to stock springs/shocks and just upgrade sway bars/ strut bars in order to improve the handling?
