91 Talon TSi FWD STI Killer
This is my journal for my 92 Talon TSi FWD.
Let me just start off with a brief history of the car from when I bought it to the present. I bought the car on October 29, 2011 from a kid near Mount Pocono, Pennsylvania for $1600. Cant remember exactly where at the moment. The car had 181K miles. The kid told me he was selling it because he had gotten alot of points on his license for speeding in it and cops would follow him. Heres what he told me about the car, I dont know whats true and not becuase there was no proof so Ill just take his word for it for now untill I find out otherwise. He said it was red and grey when he got it so he spray painted it flat black, which came out pretty good except for a few spots that he missed like around the mirrors but oh well. He said it had a brand new clipped and ported 14b turbo with 200 miles. He said the trans was rebuilt and had only 13K on it. He told me there was a boost leak from one of the stock intercooler hoses. He had a front mount intercooler mounted on it. Piping was all in the back seat. He also said there was a leak on the top of the fuel tank. It had 18 inch rims but Im unsure of the brand. He told me he rolled out the rear quarter pannels a little for clearance but the passenger side tire still rubs a little when you hit a bump. He told me he had cut the springs. And he said the exhaust was off at the cat but could be easily hooked back up. He said he did an A/C delete and a P/S delete. I brought it home and started work. I bought a new gas tank and installed it. Turns out the old tank was leaking from the fuel line that comes out of the back of the tank. I replaced about 3 feet of the fuel line due to severe rusting and it just broke all over the place when replacing the tank. I replaced all of the intercooler hoses to the side mount, which was pointless because it did not fix the boost leak at all. I painted the valve cover black and sealed up the valve cover gasket with RTV to stop a bad oil leak. I took apart the throttle body and cleaned it real good with carb cleaner and I replaced the o-ring on the BISS. I sealed the throttle body gaskets with RTV as a temporary fix. It evened out the idle a little bit and fixed some of the boost leak. The car was idling at 3000RPMs, I still need to make adjustments to the BISS though becuase the idle is a little low now but I want to fix the boost leak first because it still surges a tiny bit. I fixed the shifter linkage because he had it rigged with a zip tie and a safety pin? I dont know what he was thinking on that one. The rear drivers side rim was bent so I put some bead sealer in there and hammered it back. It had no radio so I installed an old pioneer unit my buddy gave me. I mounted 6x9 pioneer speakers in the back, which came out pretty nice I think. I hooked the power steering back up becuase I think its a pain in the ass to drive a car without it. I gave it a much needed oil change. While under the car doing the fuel tank I noticed that the exhaust is in fact disconnected at the cat but is not fixable the bolt head rusted right off. Also it is broken at the actual muffler flange by the rear wheel. Now for my plans, these will be pretty vague for now due to the fact that Im still fixing up the car a little and trying to work out the kinks. New motor Upgraded forced induction system Upgraded fuel system Upgraded internals and stroker kit AWD Conversion (I have everything except the rear sub frame) Racing trans and clutch kit. Turbo back exhaust system Targa top converstion This is what I will be doing in the near future to make it suitable for everyday drivng since it is currently my daily driver. Removing the cut springs and installing lowering springs Installing a cat back exhaust Constructing a boost leak tester and fixing the boost leak. Giving it a full tune up New power steering pump New alternator New battery New brakes and rotors New wipers My goal is for my DSM to make those rich kids that all drive around in STIs and GTIs in my town wish that their mommy and daddy bought them a DSM instead! I will post pictures of the car as it sits and also before and after pics everytime I do work on it. I will update this as I make progress and keep everyone up to date! Please feel free to comment and give feedback but please no bashing. Everyone has their own taste in what they like or dont like. So please keep it clean. Thanks and stay tuned! Kurt Here are the pics of the car so far. If you need any help, let me know. It sounds like you've got your hands full, but don't we all!
|
I like the guage alot:p.
|
What the hell is that tire gauge for?
Please tell me thats not rigged as a boost gauge |
Is the tire pressure gauge a boost Gauge? It depends on how you wanna beat a sti at drag or road coarse?
|
My jaw actually dropped at the boost/tire gauge. Too awesome. As per another post, where are you wanting to beat STI's, from a dig your going to need slicks haha.
Looks like quite the project! Good luck with it. Joel |
Im actually not sure about the guage but yes its a boost guage. And I hate it thats how the car came. Im actually gonna be removing that and putting in a real one as soon as I can but for now its what I got lol. I wanna smoke STIs on the street. They always wanna race me but a stock Talon isnt gonna beat it. So I just grit my teeth and let them go lol. I absolutely hate them.

This thing needs alot of work. But I got it for a decent price so I took it. Lowest priced TSi Ive ever seen. You have a boost leak tester handy? |

AWD Conversion (I have everything except the rear sub frame) [/QUOTE] Take pics of swap. every little detail. |
I deffinately will. I already got the trans, t-case, drive shaft, and the rear diff. All I need is the sub frame and it will go on this spring. Hopefully along with a new motor =) I wanna start from 0 miles lol that way I know its gonna last a while

Can you do a boost leak test for me?
Wow I just realized I put 91 in the title. The car is a 92 sorry about that guys. |
Ok today I fixed my front drivers side rim and resealed the tire so no more flat tire lol. Also I welded the exhaust back together so it doesnt sound like an 18 wheeler driving around. Will post pics of the welds as soon as possible.
|
So I took her to Jersey and back even though she is running like ass. But, suprisingly we made it there and back no issues except my gas gauge shitting out on me. Then it started to work again? Weird.... Also my exhaust used to be broke at the cat but I welded it. Just noticed my back seats get really warm and anything metal in the back get scolding hot. I havent looked to see if my heatshield was there or not but could this be a big problem or doesnt it matter? I dont want my car to catch on fire lol. Then I would be screwed and looking for a shell with money I dont have.
|
That "boost gauge" cracks me up, good luck with the build though!
|
that car has awesome sleeper potential, just need to flat black the front mount so it blends in. now a days peeps dont respect the 1st gens for what they can do, at least around here they dont
|
cartz-snopro -- there are sooooo many guys down in illinois that know whats up with DSMs, period. maybe dekalb has a different crowd on its own but if you drop by the chitown boards you will see what im talking about.
to the OP... let me just say it doesnt take much at all to beat these "STi's" on the street. first hand experience. I had a 92 GSX with a fresh motor and trans, stock rebuild. a tired ass big 16g, SBR cast mani, ported EVO III o2 housing to a 2.5" turboback. blown suspension. everything else was stock minus an elec. BC. That car at 15psi walked all over a STi with FMIC, 3" TBE and some random Perrin parts. This was done brutally from a dig and casually from a roll. The same car also managed to hang next to a c5 vette from a ROLL!!! I caught him by 2 cars from a dig. (all races were performed on a closed course in mexico) Moral of the story. Dont over think it. Some simple Mitsu parts (EVO III goodies) with a fresh motor and drivetrain on e85 will destroy most of whats bouncing around Pennsylvania. Im also curious why the targa? All your doing is weakening the cars structure... |
good luck man!

You'll need a lot more than that. You need a front subframe, front knuckles, steering intermediate shaft, different fuel tank, diffferent exhaust, AWD rear shocks, and the list continues on. Not to be an ass, but you won't get it done. |
Or go with a solid rear axle.
|
You'll still need all of what I posted about. I might just know a thing or three on the 1g awd conversion.
|
I got a car just like that from Pittsburgh.. I guess they really like flat black out there. Make sure the boost in your tires is set to at least 35 psi lmao.
|
Ok been a while since I posted. So Im gonna give an update. I built a BLT and found my boost leak. Turned out to be pin holes in the upper neck of the SMIC. So I fixed that with a crafty JB Weld job. Found several vacuum leaks and fixed those. Threw some new plugs in her. Ripped the interior out and cleaned it up real nice. Gave her a bath lol. Still studders a little bit. Think I may have low compression. Gonna do a compression test on saturday. Got a new job so the cash is flowin, and flowin damn good lol. Gonna be able to get alot of work done now. Needs struts, ball joints, tie rod ends, rotors and calipers. Also gotta get my rear quarter window fixed. As for the flat black, I like it.... but I would like it better if it wasnt a rattlesnake paint job. Gonna get a new paint job in the spring but its not gonna be flat black. Leaning more towards Gloss black or smoke grey. Still in between. Oh ya and got my exhaust welded but ordering an aftermarket exhaust this weekend. Heres some pics.
P.S. Got rid of that hideous tire gauge rig job. GONE!!!! Thank god! So I had to get it towed home from the side of the highway in Clarks Summit and take the fuel pump out of my spare tank and popped it in. Fired right up! |
Sorry if I missed this somewhere, but do you just have that front mount on for show?
|
Ya dude just for show! Get real man. Who tha hell has a FMIC for show? I bought the car with it already mounted. Piping was in the back seat. Needs a few couplers to be connected. Piping is 80 miles away at a friends house and I have a suspended license. God some people on this sight are ignorant. Sorry I dont have thousands of dollars at my disposal to satisfy you critics. Yes that would be a tire gauge for a boost gauge. I hated it so I removed it. Yes that front mount is not hooked up. Whats the point of removing it though. Does it kill you that much that its there. Here Ill go outside right now at 10 PM and remove it so you feel better. Ill even post a new picture of my car with no front mount. I now remember why Im never on this site anymore. Snobby DSMers.

Not sure if he edited his post, but I'm pretty sure all he did was ask a very simple question. An understandable question since it wasn't described elsewhere, and suddenly you're posting pictures of your sidemount. No need to blow your lid, no-ones being a dick. |
its nice to get crticism every once in a while. especially when your not AS familiar with these cars as others.
with that said... just relax man. question, if you dont have an endless amount of money to put into this car, then why do a stroker kit? poke around on here and see that a 1g/2g combo rotating assembly will stomp out most of the street cars out there. couple that with what i said in my first post and you'll be in pretty good shape. also, if you have a suspended license, why make a post about racing STi's on the street? im just pointing shit out, not trying to be a dick. there are a lot of keyboard ninjas out there and im just trying to help you not say things that others will flame you for in the future. if you want to hook up your FMIC, let me know what size couplers you need. I have a bunch laying around that do me no good. |
either way bud its a clean 1g man. side mount or not i like it
|
Thanks guys. Didnt really mean to flip my lid but I get alot of crap on this site because Im a nooby. As for stroker. Its just a goal. May or may not be accomplished and if I do decide to take that path, I will have to save money for it. If you seen the car in person, I dont think clean would be the right choice of words. Lol the car is litterally a rolling death trap and a pile of shit. But I love it and want to make it look like a showcar and perform like a race car. From rags to riches lol. As for the couplers. I think I need 2 of the 3" to 2" couplers. And from 2" to whatever the stock piping for the TB elbow, BOV, and J-Pipe are. Dont have the aftermarket pieces so Im gonna make the OEM pieces work for now. Apologies for my earlier remarks nothing against the guy who said it but like I said. I get shit on this site for not being as educated as some of the other people. I know you have all seen how some of the members are treated. Criticism is ok to an extent. That extent would be with helpful intentions. Most people dont understand that and they criticise by bashing or sarcastic remarks.
My license is suspended and I no longer drive, but there was a point in time where I didnt have the option to stop driving. Had to get to work and whatnot and I live in a rural area so no Public Transportation was available. Now I have stopped driving as Im temporarily staying with my mother because of complications with my previous land lord. So untill I get a new apartment I wont need to drive. By then hopefully my license is restored just gotta keep busting my ass at work so I can pay off my fines. The stock 2g thottlebody elbow will help you out as i am sure some of the guys here have some lying around and the j-pipe that attaches to the turbo will help you out with the front mount unstall
|
Thanks. I was wondering how I was trying to figure out how I was going to be hooking it all up. Just need a BOV pipe
