Just lookin for a little reassurance here;
I lost 3rd about 2 weeks ago and then it locked into 4th. I can agressively pull the lever out and force it into another gear but then the car is completely locked down and will not move even with the clutch in(it is stuck in 2 gears;duh) I believe that the 3/4 shift fork broke. and the broke piece fell into 4th gear mech and has lodged in until I remove from inside. Do those symptoms sound like it is shift fork or could it be something else. The guy at dealership asked"are you sure it is the fork?" as if it wasnt. Kind of messed with me.

It could be broken rail end as well. You need to take the tranny apart to find out for sure.

Sorry, I lost my decoder ring. What the hell did you just say? :confused:

was it really that hard to understand? it mad senese to me. In nuetral i had third. In the third gear position and in the fourth gear position i also had third gear. So when i let the clutch out if i was in those three positions i would move forward. All the other positions had no gears.

???:confused: hu hu huu:confused: ???

Yes, it was that hard to understand, but I get it now. I'm kinda having a similar prob now. The shifter feels normal, and it's actuating the linkage on top of the trans, but if I let the clutch out in neutral it's still in gear. I think it's the clutch, but we'll see. The trans comes off soon. I don't think it could be a broken fork because the shifter still feels normal (I though a broken fork caused the shifter to get stuck in gear), but I guess it might be.

I bet its your shift fork, happened to me, whatever you do dont try to force your car to roll it will just grind up more internals.
even if its not the fork something (tranny piece) is lodged.

That hapened to me too. I lost 3rd then became stuck in 4th. I wobbled the stick between 3rd and 4th a couple times then in nuetral a couple times and that seems to work. Until i was driving in 4th and not thinking tryed to slip it into fifth and the transmission expelled 5th gear from the side of the case as it seemed. It was still in 4th when i went to 5th... Neeed a new tranny now

My 95 TSi AWD is having I think the same prob. I was on I-5 in rush hour and 3rd started to grind and want to pop out every once in a while. Then I just lost every gear but 3rd or fourth (no neutral/rev either) no matter what position the shifter is in (& levers on the trans - they are working fine) I creep forward bogging badly.

2 questions:
1-does this seem like the same broken fork or rail end problem you guys are having?
2-is it usually fixable by replacing/removing the broken part(s) say with a new kit from TRE or am I looking at selling my car now?

thanks in advance
(Des Moines area)

Dont sell it, Id say get the TRE kit if you were sure what it was. But Just buy a used one on ebay i got mine for 175 on ebay for a gst tranny. With shipping 260. If there close it will be cheaper. trty out ebay and get a tranny

I would order the TRE kit now if I were sure, but I'm not, so I'll wait until I pull it apart.

This is the third tranny the car haas had, so I won't trust one from ebay or something. Also, this one was rebuilt about 20K ago. If it is as broken fork or a rail, the rest of It should be ok right?
