Tonight I was pulling off my VC to put that little ball bearing back in someone was kind enough to leave out and I noticed that my TC seemed to be locked. I've never seen one so is it normal when holding it in your hand, not to be able to turn any of the inside in relation to the outer case? If it's locked would this explain why in reverse, tranny seems to want to jump out of the car? All forward gears are fine. Just reverse causes a violent shuddering, especially if I turn the wheels. Tranny was supposedly rebuilt recently ( just acquired car). The oil was clean with no debris at all.

It's normal for the VC to be nearly impossible to turn. You might have better luck turning it if you put one of the splined shafts into the VC and torque it hard.
When a VC blows it tends to get easier to turn.

I'm not sure about the reverse stuff. Does the car seem to shudder when you do a U-turn in first, too? That might point to a center diff problem. If you still have the tranny apart check the center diff. You should be able to turn the inner splined shaft that comes out of the diff easily, and peek inside to make sure the spider gears are spinning. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for the info. I will be pulling the tranny this next weekend. It seems there are several cracks around the bell housing. I think it's time for another tranny. I have one in my TSI that I will probably use.

I have a question some what on topic, My car is stuttering when i make U turns like it has a welded center diff but its a new tranny any way my question is does the type of tranny fluid or rear diff fluid matter? The person i had do the work used i belive he said 80 weight gear oil. I was going to change it to red line but i am not sure what weight to go for. I was thinking if it is two think would it interfer with the VC doing its job or the lsd unit in the rear doing its job?

I use GM Synchro Mesh that I just go to a local GM dealer to get. It's easier for me to come by than BG Synchro Mesh. Check http://www.roadraceengineering.com/eclexhaust.htm for other tranny fluids. In the T-case and rear end (4 bolt LSD) I am using Redline Heavy Weight Shock Proof Gear Lube. As for the fluid in the VC, it's a sealed unit that has it's own type of goop in it.

That stuttering is usually a sign of a failed center diff or transfer case.

I take the car back to the shop again and have them change the tranny again. I have had nothing but drive train problems since i bought this car this sucks. I hope to get them strightened out soon.

I hear ya, buddy. Just because the shop put on another tranny doesn't mean it's a good tranny. There are some trannys in the junkyard that have busted center diffs, too.

Bringing this back from the dead..

A few months ago my driver side axle fell out of the transmission because the carrier bolts had fallen out at some point. I was forced to drive it with the axel out of the tranny about 3 miles to get it where i could fix it. Ever since that happened the car has been having a hard time sending power to the rear. If i try to launch hard the front will spin a LOT before the rear starts to engage, like the front tires will start to smoke pretty good and the rear seems very slow to engage, even in the rain or on dirt. I am wondering if the 3 miles i drove with the axle out could have worn(heated) the fluid in the VC too much and damaged it somehow? I have another one and i am completely aware of how to change it while its on the car, i just want some insight on this before i undertake it.
