What is the differance between the 1g and the 2g center diff? Are they interchangable

yes?......YES?!.....huh? more explaination needed. hell i wanna know this too. i think the spider gears are different but are swapped for more strength or am i thinkin of somethin' else.....its too damn early

so what your saying is that since i have a blown trans. in my 2g that i can go get an easier to find 1g tranny and swap the internals. also what parts seem to be stronger. not like it matters. need all new. piece of the 1/2 gear shaft broke off got hung in the 1/2-3/4 joining and crushed all the gear teeth on both shafts, pieces strolled on over and speckelled the teeth on the cent diff. but i have a good housing still and exellent cent diff internals and good front diff. so i can use the 1g parts for those parts i blew. including the center diff housing.

I don't know about the rest of the tranny, but the center diff seems to be the same. The service manual only list one tranny for all years (91 and up), but I do have a 90 center diff in my 2g tranny right now. The 90 center diff lookes exactly the same as the other diffs. Same gear count (37) and everything.

THEY ARE NOT THE SAME!!! The angle on the gears is slightly different. Factory put a line through the gears to tell the difference between the two.

As a matter of fact, you might notice that many gears inside the transmission have lines through them. It can be anything from 0 to 2 lines. That identifies 3 different types of gear sets. You MUST always make sure that they match! Do not ask me how I know :).

Check it out.

LOL

I wish you said something earlier. But yes you are right, The gears are set a slightly different angle. The 90 Center diff has a single line cut on all the gears, and the 91 and above have a double line cut on all the gears. After we put the 90 center diff in and the second case, we turned the gears and three pieces of gears snapped off the center diff

90 center diff is NOT THE SAME as other diffs!!

A lesson learned the hard way

I know I am bringing this back from the dead but I just broke teeth in my trans so want to correct this before anyone else comes here.

Slanted J is WRONG. The 90 center diff has NO LINES and the 91+ has a single line cut on the center diff.
