Ok..Heres our problem...

A friend of mine has bought a 94 GST 5 speed and it had a nice little crack in the bellhousing.

When he bought the car, the guy gave him a good transmission to.

Last night, after swapping out the transmissions, they noticed that the axle is to small for the transmission. Both transmissions also read the same F5M33 transmissions in them.

Ive searched the 1000 Already Answerd Questions, DSMTuners, DSM.org, Talon Digest. I cant find anything. Any help would be appreciated.

I recently put a 2G FWD transmission in my 91 laser, I had the same problem. The 2G FWD transmission took a larger size axle than my original 1G. I ended up putting a 1G differential into the 2G case. I had to do quite a bit of grinding on the separator plate that goes between the engine and transmission to get the starter to line up. If I had to do it over I would probably try a 2G separator plate. I also had to swap on my 91 shifter linkage and buy 1G axle seals.
If it's a 2G transmission it will have extra bolt holes on the front and back of the bellhousing since the 2G moved the front and rear motor mounts to the transmission.

Anybody know when the swap to larger diameter axles took place?

well it is a 1g tranny cuz all the bolts line up perfect it is just a weird one that has different third member for some reason. a guy i called said i would have to crack open the case and switch it (the third member) with the one that is in the bad tranny i have. but i am not gonna do that ill buy custom axels before i do that. by the way the car is mine. so the question still looms what is the deal here?

The NT 4g63 (f5m33) and the Turbo FWD tranny (f5m33) share the same number.. but i think the axles are a lil diffirent...

A turbo car will eat up a NT tranny very quickly too.

This thread has to much mis-information.

The 1G NT 4g63 and the 1G Turbo FWD tranny DO NOT share the same tranny number or Transaxle model number.

The 1G NT 4G63 tranny model # is F5M22 and the 1G Turbo FWD 4G63 tranny model # is F5M33.

1990 model year to 1992 model year FWD Turbo DSM trannies all have the same size
input shaft on the axle as 90-98 AWD Turbo DSMs and share the same size gears in the front diff.

That's why when you buy a Quiafe front diff. it fits 90-98 AWD and 90-92 FWD Turbo DSMs.

The full tranny model number is stamped on the bell housing, a 90-92 FWD Turbo DSM tranny has F5M33-SPZV on it. This means you have the smaller axles.

The 93-94 FWD Turbo DSM trannies have F5M33-SPQV stamped on them, this means you have the beefier diff and the bigger axles.

A 95-99 2G FWD Turbo DSM tranny has F5M33-SPZT stamped on it also has same beefier diff and bigger axles. The difference between the 93-94 1G axles and 95-99 2G axles are the length.

Bottom line is if you have a FWD Turbo tranny you want to swap into your DSM make sure it's for your year DSM.

Yes you can put a 93-94 tranny into your 90-92 DSM but make sure you also use the 93-94 axles, otherwise you'll have to swap diffs in order to make your old 90-92 axles fit.

If you decide to put a 2G FWD Turbo tranny into your 93-94 DSM all you need is the 2G tranny to block dust plate to allow your starter holes to match up. The 93-94 axles will just bolt right in since it already has the same beefier diff.

Hope this helps anyone searching through the archives that come across this problem.
