this just started this morning, everytime i shift from first to second or third to second i get a grind, sounds like gears crunching together, it'll go into gear, and stay in gear fine, when you push it in.

3 weeks ago i install a b&m short shifter (%50 throw), like i said this just started this morning, i don't pound the tranny nor do i drive the car super hard. 1st to 2nd has always been a pain though.

how long will it last, cause i don't have the time nor the money for like the next 6 months to deal with the tranny?

it will continue to do that until you replace the 2nd and 3rd gear synchro rings. Parts are only $25 total, it's teh labor that will kill you. I drove around on a bad 2nd gear for over a year.

I have the same problem with my second gear, noslo2pto, you say the parts are only 25$, any one know where I can find info on doing this on my own, or is it jsut easier to acctually have someone else do it?

Assuming only the 2nd gear synchro ring is bad, the rings for each gear are only $10-12 ea. w/DSM discount at conicelli mitsubishi. However, I would try to find someone that has done THESE trannies before to rebuild it. Doing it youself, isn't recommended, but CAN be done. You just need patience, some sort of rebuild manual (technical manual works great), and the right tools.

I had my 90 GSX tranny 'rebuilt" by a Mitsu mechanic that does work on the side. I paid $50 for new rings and gave him $200 to replace them. For the most part, the parts are cheap (assuming just rings are bad), it's the labor that kills you.

I would NOT recommend taking it to a generic tranny rebuild place. They will charge you top $$ to rebuild it, and use THEIR parts, which may or may not be OEM spec. 99% of shops won't take YOUR parts, since they can't make any money off the parts you bring in. So, good luck.

i'm going to drive around with it for a while, maybe 6 months to a year (as stated above by someone else). i'm in the process of buying a house so i don't have any cash for a tranny right now.

but when it's time i'll take off the tranny and send it off, probably shep racing, and just get quite a bit done to it, when i got the car it had 99k on it, so basically anything that happens to it i'm just going all out and fixing it, pretty soon i'm going to have a brand new eclipse :)

thx for all the info guys.

hell, dont jump the gun. everyone always says synchro's when the subject of grinding comes up. bleed your clutch lines and adjust your clutch pedal and use synchromesh and some transmission treatment fluid. i did this and now my first and second gear grinding is no more. shifts like it was brand new. dont sink money into something if you dont know it is the problem for sure. my 2 cents. try that and see the difference you get. :thumb:

yeah my 2nd gear was helped a LOT by adding gm syncromesh, it had mobil 1 in it from previous owner and that stuff was HORRIBLE

I have always though mobil 1 wasnt good for our transmissions. On their website it says it is only for GL5 specific. Well our car take gl4 gear oil.
