Yeah, I know, lame topic, but I know of a few people here who have had the lovely "Pop out of First Gear" mod, and have been able to fix it via shifter cable changing.

I'm just wondering what exactly you did to get rid of this rather annoying trait, because it sucks at stoplights.

I got the same thing happening to me, except the trans wont go "fully" into gear, it will only go 1/2 way. Then when i give it gas it just pops out of 1st gear. I also have a hard time "finding" gears, its like there is an obstruction in the gate that wont let me go into gear. BTW I have a 93 Tsi and just had a 91 trans put in there could this be the problem, is the linkage different?

i think on pre91 the holes on the trans arms are different. did u compare them?

No matter what Cables you have be sure & FIRST go to the Tranny & eliminate any lost motion - that is - bad Cable End Bushings at the Tranny Shift Levers, Loose Shift Cable Support Bracket that bolts to Tranny - then eliminate any lost motion / worn Bushings or Mounts at the Shifter itself - THEN ADJUST THE CABLE ENDS.
