Does your DSM grind into reverse? Do you have to force it into 1st?

Besides being a cylinder problem, it could be this

as I found out this weekend while replacing my master and slave cylinders, clutch, and flywheel.

Scary, ain't it?

what makes one do that? Im having trouble with 1st/5th but it may be a cable problem.

You think it could be the same thing?
Because im replacing the GEAR OIL and going to use the Metal Sybro shift kit and see if it works better then , if it dosent then ill bring it back to mitsu before wty goes out.

as far as the reason for reverse grinding it is because there is no synchro mesh gear for reverse. so it acts like a dog box and will be hard to get in some time or may make a grind but there really isn't anything a guy can do about it. As far as first gear goes you more than likely have a bad synchro gear or clutch fork..

Architecture Grad's Gallery Loft Design Takes First Place!?!?! wow that is scary!!!

just kidding, heh i hope you replaced that with a steel fork!

my Z grinds into reverse. And when coming to stop lights it has to be forced into first, but it never grinds in the forward gears. I figured it was just a 1977 thang. Yea, I know I'm ol' school. Not to mention that this is the first stick I've ever driven. Its good to know that its not just me. I'll change the transmission oil and all other fluids, and see if that helps. Maybe even add some of that super-slick synthetic lubricant crap. I'll tell ya if it helps.

My 91 AWD TSI grinds when going into second gear all the time. This seems to be the only gear that grinds. Any idea why this would be happening? Do I need a new tranny or could this possibly just be my syncho's??

Thanks.

It is most likely your synchro. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to beef things up elsewhere while you have the tranny out and opened up.

if you're cheap or you just can't get to the tranny right away, put in some Redline fluid. it'll do wonders for your tranny. it's like $10 a quart, but it's cheap insurance and can fix or reduce common grinding due to wear.

hmmm, Ill have to check that out. I have a new master and slave cylinder. And I have to force it into 1st coming up to stop signs, pita. And it has trouble engaging all the way into Reverse sometimes.

some cars (don't know if DSM's are included) have a 1st gear lockout at higher speeds to keep you from accedentally or purposefully over revving the engine. i believe all cars have this for the reverse gear. it also helps with occasional stupidity. you might also try just adjusting the clutch pedal action on the rod above the accelerator pedal.
