I didn't float any valves or anything but something like the high pitched sound of small metal parts breaking *plink, plunk*. Was on the fwy and went to downshift to 4th quickly but she missed and went to 2nd gear, I couldn't catch it fast enough to save the damage it caused. I had to drive the car to a trans shop and I had to force the car into 2nd to get it going, once trying real hard on a slight incline and now the gear just grinds while the car isn't moving. What does that mean? I took it to a place called Multistate transmission who does reputable and honest work; from what they can see it will be 980 bucks to fix the clutch that is broken, that's excluding the trans. My question is this: What is the possible damage to the trans? I couldn't even force it into 1st gear. If I get the work done may the car be driveable? I have given all the info I can think of...let me know what else. Thanks for any advise you guys can give me on this, if I don't get it fixed I'll be waiting another week for a paycheck. :(

Hope he lives close; I have no idea how much it would cost to get it towed there. I'll wait for his response, it's worth the thought. Thanks dsmed. :)

I think he charges somewhere around 700ish for a tranny rebuild. But you know his work is good. Thats the only person I recommend anyone to get tranny work done from.

They're quoting me 998 bucks for just the clutch job, assuming there's nothing wrong with the trans...:(

or you can let me take a look and i'll tell you what you need on your tranny.

Ok, looks like my friend has a brother-in-law whose a master mechanic. He's going to replace my clutch and tranny for 600 bucks. The tranny shifts fine when the engine isn't rotating. I think it's fine except for the 2nd gear synchro. Normally a car won't go into 1st gear without the clutch, right? Set, I would have you take a look but you're in Philly :D

He says he can have it fixed in a few days to a week. I need to get to work and the quicker it gets fixed the quicker I don't have to take a cab. :thumb:

good luck and let us know how it turn out.

Ok, got a quote on labor from a shop my friend referred me to, it's going to cost $475 for labor provided I'm bringing the parts. I ordered the stock clutch for $160 total, they'll take 2-3 days to get here (sigh). so for $635 I can get it done plus whatever it's going to cost to get it towed tomorrow (100 bucks or so probably). Is this acceptable? It's the best I can do at the moment...

I did the exact same thing at the drag strip. It did absolutely nothing to the trans, but I sent the throwout bearing through the splines on the pressure plate and exploded all the springs on the clutch. I bought a Luc replacement clutch for $175, had the axles rebuilt, and new front pads. I did all the work with the help of a friend in about 6 hours including waiting 2 hours for the axles to get redone. You (honestly) should not be charged more than $300 for a FWD clutch, if it's just labor at $60 an hour I can't see spending more than 5 hours on it. If $600 includes the cost of a clutch and a transmission (and a trans fluid refill) you're getting a good deal, however if that is just the labor, you're getting screwed.

I would like to undertake the project myself but I don't want to run into complications while doing it. I haven't done it before and I've already been down a week or two so I can't afford to not be prepared. Did you run into any real problems when doing it yourself? Also, this is an AWD job, so it's going to cost extra. I'm going to print out the VFaq and when I have money and the right tools (in addition to planning) do an aftermarket clutch install. I'm confident that I can do the job but since I'm in a bind would it be better to let someone else handle it? I'm already having the car towed from one shop to the other (which is going to do the work) and waiting for parts. Anyone do an AWD clutch install, btw? How hard is the extra work? Thanks for all the input, it really helps me out.

Sorry I didn't see that it was AWD, there is a little extra like having to drop the rear driveshaft and transfer case to do the clutch, but usually teh charge is an extra 50-100 for it.

when I did this originally I got off the freeway and parked the car. I wasn't able to put it in 1st gear at all (which really worries me) and I forced 2nd gear so much trying to roll and sync up that I ate up the syncro, that gear just grinds. now I may be able to do the clutch but will the car go into first once I fix the clutch? That's the tough part. I should've never driven the car in the first place; it should've been towed. I understand taking the trans apart to change a syncro is not easy work.

heh, I did that kinda.... 5th to 1st... was going like 55... it hit 10000rpms before I saved it, but everything mysteriously runs just fine... dayum

I'm just wondering when the clutch is fixed if the car can be driven, since Cjburn says it should be able to be forced into 1st. I would've had to force it way too hard. Forcing it into 2nd by applying pressure would get the car rolling to where I could slip it into gear but I destroyed my synchro in 2nd doing that. Bad call! LOL. Should've gotten in towed. I can shift without the clutch but I found it only works if you:
a) get out, push then bail in and put it into gear while your buddy catches up ALA Dukes of Hazzard :D(found this worked best but only after 2nd gear synchro went)
b) try to force it into second by using the synchros to get the car moving to engine speed (does NOT work on an incline, this is how I destroyed it)

need some advice, do you think the car will be drivable if it will not go into 1st and synchro is gone in 2nd? tranny goes into all gears when the car is off.

$475 is not bad at all, but you should also consider the price for getting all the tools. Here's the break down:

1) Good set of tool with sizes up to 24mm = $100
2) Craftsman prybar = $20
3) Long socket wrench extensions = $20 (Optional)
4) Home Depot Long Metal Strip to fabricate flywheel tiedown = $10
5) All Purpose grease for throw out bearing = $5
6) Gear Oil for Tranny and tcase = $20
7) 2" x 8' hard wood from depot = $5 (Optional, need this to support the rope and tranny)
8) 20' of 200lb rated rope from depot = $15 (Optional, need this to tie around the tranny so it won't drop on you)

Total came up to be $195. $155 for not using optional items. To rebuild tranny is a whole different story, you'll need 36mm socket, hydraulic press, hole punch, and etc. Good luck.
