are the rear diff ratios between a 92 4 bolt and a 96 4 bolt different? the reason i ask is because i would like to install a 23 spline transfer case from a 92 into a 96. and if they are the same is there any other reason it wouldn't work?

According to the chart which is on VFAQ under drivetrain, they are different.

You can interchange T-cases from 91-96 with no problems. 90 can be used if you swap out the transfer shaft. 97+ cannot be used due to a different ratio T-case. AT T-cases cannot be used due to different bolt pattern.

I have personally swapped T-cases so I know this works.

I remember reading about this guy who used jdm gears and an off year tcase and rear diff to change not only the gear ratios, but also the overall ratio, he was doing some CRAZY work on his car, made it so apparently in 5th gear at redline he was doing 110 or something, but could break them loose at any rpm in any gear

this was a 3/s though... alas, maybe ill spark someones brain who knows all the gear ratios perfectly

and no, the reason he could break all 4 loose so easily was NOT because the fronts were different speeds than the rears, it was because of the ratio he had. the wheels spun at the correct speeds.

I changed my 1g tranny for a 2g tranny, all I did was change the heads of the transfer( I think thats what your calling the spline section). Be carefull when bolting the head of the transfer case back on, because I accidently tighten them down to much and broke the ear off and now my is leaking.
