So last night I noticed that my car had a clunk will in a turn while I am going slow (not all the time though) It is worst when I am going in reverse and start to turn. It is a loud clunk noise. I can't tell what side it is comeing from but I know the noise is in the front of the car. I lifted the front of the car and tried to spin one of the wheels and if I go slow it will grab the other wheel and turn it the opposite way but if I start to spin it faster it stops grabbing the other wheel and begins to make a soft clunking sound. When the front of the car is up you can spin it backwards and it will grab but not while spining the wheel frontwards. The wheels on the rear of the car will grab when turned forward but backwards makes that soft clunking noise in the fron of the car .I checked the cv boots and there is no tears or leaks. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like a chipped tooth inside the front differential. Often when a tooth chips, it will grab in one direction, but not the other.

But before you pull the tansmission: lift the front (only), leave the car in gear, and try turning each of the fronts forwards and backwards. Report what the other wheel does.

Ok I finally got a chance to lift the car and with it in gear the wheels turn both ways with no clunk. It works fine. I tried to look at all the mounts and I found nothing wrong. I think it is the cv joint. There is no visible damage but there is a little play. Is that normal?
