weird shifter issue...

I just picked up my 90 TSi AWD. i drove ~ 200 miles with it. then ran into this weird problem... the shifter will only go into 1,2,3,4. 5 & reverse are imposable to get into.

when its in 1,2 the shifter has about one inch left to right of play. 3,4 have about 6 inches of play.. this all hapend rapidly, like within a 1 mile length of time. when i go to the far right and try to up it goes into 3rd, and when i try to go down it goes into 4th. i hope this is making sense....

is this a shifter bushing issue? or what? I'm so confused, and kinda need reverse, i could live without 5th, but not having reverse is a bit of a pain in the ass...

Make sure your cable bracket is still bolted on. Check your bushings, too.
