let me do alittle explaining before i pop the question
i bought my 92 talon awd auto after this guy put in a standard tranny
ever since ive had it it has had a grinding noise comming from the rear end
i know it has the j1t rear end which i think is the auto rear diff.
i recently found out that the auto and standard cars need diffrent rear end ratios??
i have been driving the car like this for at least 7,000 miles
i still have power to the rear wheels( the diffrent ratio i was told would quickly burn out my tcase or tranny) i want to know

is the j1t for autos or standards becuase if its wrong im going to change it??

is the pinion from an auto 4 bolt swapable with a 3 bolt standard??

help please

my car has a 4bolt lsd in it now the j1t

The standard and automatic used different rear gear ratios. You cannot mix them without burning up the Viscous Coupling in the tranny. You wont kill the transfer case, it doesn't care what gear is behind it. You also cannot just swap the pinion gear. You have to change the ring gear too and it's a pain in the butt and requires special tools to do properly.

I have an automatic LSD diff and axles for $200 if you're interested. :thumb:

sounds like he is looking to see if he has the right rearend, sorry i cannot answere that because i never messed with an auto. and it sounds like he would be interested in a manual rear diff.

like he said i would worry more about the viscouse coupling or the rear end, you will know if you viscouse coupling is shot.
