I have a 91 tranny in my 90 talon and have problems. I have read that I would need to only change the cables and shift cable bracket on the 91 to a 90. I also heard that I was able to run the 90 cables but needed to change the shifter base in the car for it to work. If anyone can tell me what works please I need to know soon as possible. This matter maybe affecting why I having problems with my tranny not wanting to go into gear.

Whoever told you that a 91 tranny would work on a 90 tranny was on crack at the time. The 90 is a 23 spline, and 91+ is a 22 spline. (this is why the 90 is referd as the bastard year for DSM, it matches almost nothing). What kind of condition is your tranny in (the 91) I need one. PM if you want to sell it.
Not to mistaken you but the 90 and most 91 have a 22 spline output shaft. I believe they have made some tranny's in 91 with 23 splines but its not common to hear. In 92+ the tranny's come out with 23 spline for the output shaft.
For as my question goes I was wondering if I need to change the cables, shifter base, or shifter cable brackets for the tranny to go into gear fine. I read on VFAQ that you need the shift cable off of a 91 if transfer a 91 tranny to a 90 model car. And also it says I need to switch the bracket that holds on the cables to the tranny. And than today I called someone and ask for professional advice and they mentioned I need to change the shifter base in the car for the tranny to go into 1st and 2nd gear. I was hoping to find someone that has already put a 91 and up tranny in there 90 and to tell me what changes they had to make of the shift linkage.
Mine refused to go into gear on a 91 tranny with 90 cables shifter base assembly and a 91 bracket. I had to go to a junkyard and get the 91 base bracket and I had a set of 91 cables. Gravy after that! Was only like 20 bucks too and it can come from a N/T also.

Sorry man, didn't see this yesterday. I put a 92 GVR4 tranny in mine. Bought a shifter and cables etc. out of a 92 eclipse and all is good. Except the tranny is messed up now... time for Shep to get a hold of it I guess....
NO problem, just like to hear what everyone has done. I have thought about just switching out the cable brackets and shift levers off the tranny. I am trying to avoid the shifter base and cable route b/c hate to get do away with the short throw. At the time I am having a few guys working out a tranny problem (the infamous engaging and disengaging) and the trans is out wanted to do what I need before they put the tranny back in.
during a 5speed swap and a jdm swap, i have to cut and weld the shifter cables, to fit, since they were from a 1.8, ahha, all i could fine locally. but it worked after that.
i have 90 and i but 92 tranny in, i got the 92 cables and base and bracket from a 92 in the junk yard, and everything is on and it dosent go in gears at all and barly moves side to side??????? i dont get it
i messed with it and took everything off and put it back on and its good now lol i have no clue ### i did diffrent or ### i did rong the first time.. it was weird
ok sounds kinda wierd but i am doing and engine and trans swap from a 90 to my 91.......dont worrie it is just temporary till i can rebuild my 91 engine and trans......i was just wondering how to remove the lever from the 90 trans so that i can put the longer one into the 90 trans so my linkage fits up right. it looked like it had a little roll pin in it but i could not get that out.....any help would be appreciated.
For those of you swapping in 91+ cables to a 90, were both cable ends (shifter side) adjustable (like the 1990s) or was only one? If so which arm (the adjustable one) did it attach?
I've recently got hold of a set of 1993 cables (top two in pic) and shifter and am trying to figure out cable orientation.
BTW.. my 1991 tranny in a 1990 used the OEM 1990 shifter/cables/tranny bracket, which I made work by drilling/tapping the non-removable shifter arm on the tranny so could install a bolt to mount the shift cable in the same orientation as was on my 1990 tranny. Worked nicely
