If it is the BMTranny insert, which I am sure it is, then it is an excellent product for the money. It is no Quaiffe, but it is $800 cheaper and does a damn good job. I know a couple people using it who love it. If you are going to do this mod, I recommend doing the halfshaft mod as well. Together they make a huge difference and will make you fall in love all over again with your FWD.

They are basically the same just that one is sold by BM and the other by Phantom Grip. They both use heavy springs to apply pressure to 2 surfaces to apply force within the gears of the front diff.

Thanks man, I figured out how it worked. I was trying to figure out if rsk wantabe was saying they were different other than who made them. Either BM cloned the Phantom Grip or their OEM'ing them from them. I'm pretty sure PG came first.

Although Phantom Grip did hit the import scene first (I saw ads for Hondas in 1999, I think), using springs to make your open diff act like a LSD has been around for a long time... I have read that 60s muscle cars were using the same trick way back when.

As Rich said, combining the half shaft mod with the BM or PG LSD insert does make a big difference. I no longer have torque steer and will hardly ever spin my wheel. It almost seems like I no longer have the same hp since I can not hear/smell the burning rubber. :)

Note that this is not a true LSD and when I first started using it, i did notice the wheels would squeal when making tight turns (like if you welded your diff). But that has diminihed over time and may have been a function of not being broken in yet.

If I had $1000 more to blow I would have gotten the Quaiffe (made in England) or maybe even the disk one from Japan (forgot the name, but not Cusco) which goes for about $850.

The PG diff is based on a clutch type LSD minus the clutches hence the huge price difference.

I've got a custom built clutch type LSD on my Maxima. Honestly the LSD is one of the best mods available for any car with a decent amount of power. Until you have one, it's hard to explain why it's so great, but once you get one you never want to drive without it.

Has anybody used the BM unit in a AWD? I'm currently rebuilding my tranny and I'm wondering if I should do it.

It will work, but is not necessary. Chnaces are if you are spinning only one front wheel, you got other problems to worry about. I'd take the $200 for the front LSD and invest it in a 4 spider gear center diff.
