I know its usually the other way around. I have a 1995 Eclipse NON turbo with the 5 speed. My sister would like to get this car from me but refuses to learn to drive a stick. She loves the car but it has to have an automatic trans. Is this swap possible and cost effective vs me selling this and then finding her another one with an automatic?

Are there are tech articles written about doing this in the 2G non turbo cars. I'm sure I can offset the cost by selling the manual trans. Any links, tips, or information anybody can give me on this would be appreciated. Also if anybody that is somewhat local to central NJ is interested in swapping everything that is needed let me know.

Thanks

Tell your sister to suck it up. I've taught many a gf to drive a stick, they've all enjoyed it once they got the hang of it. OTherwise, sell it to someone else, swapping a tranny to sell a car to a family member is just.... stupid.

The stick is not an option unfortunatly. I know selling the car and buying another is easier, but if the swap is straight forward and somebody local wanted to swap it would be an option. I have alot of money and time in this car thats the only reason I would consider doing it.

I think you need to get a auto ECU and TCU along with the tranny swap..

I know how it is.. My wife refuses to learn to drive a stick... It's why I don't have a EVO or STi... I refuse to buy a automatic... :(

i know this is beating a dead horse, but the logic behind this entire situation is retarded. get her to learn how to drive it. even if she ends up like those bitches you see behind riced out cars grinding every gear and mishifting for a couple of days, do not get an automatic.

use your brain and think about it. why would we strongly advise against it? we're here to help, not to sabatoge your car. i guess if you enjoy those $2,000 automatic rebuilds, slower car, heavier transmission, less gears, and shittier power transfer, go ahead and get it.

Hey guys trust me I am with you on this one. I guess my family is lazy and don't want to have to think about shifting gears, even though I know that the auto non turbo cars are the biggest dogs in the world. I think the 5 speed is what makes the whole car, but they just don't seem to agree. Right now she drives a 1988 Jeep Cherokee Limited but it keeps breaking down and to be honest I'm tired of working on the thing. Thats why I thought I would try and stick her in my Eclipse, since it has been nothing but good to me. I guess I have no choice but to sell it, and she can find another car to suit her needs.

Thanks for all the advise

I say find someone who wants to do an AT to MT swap, and trade with them. It doesn't sound like your sister is after a phaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasssstt car, so the argument above shouldn't matter.

That said, I don't know exactly what parts/work would be involved, so I can't really help too much.

i have an automatic tranny for sale, its off my 94 galant, but the manual i put in was from a 95 eclipse, and considering the tranny's for them are identical, it'll bolt up fine.

Thanks for all the replies guys. The only way I would consider doing this is if I found sombody local so I know we would get all the parts we need to do a complete swap. I know with these kind of swaps they can nickel and dime you to death if you don't have a COMPLETE swap kit. We will see what happens.
