I bought a used Quaife. The diff. is in good shape except for some cupping on the surface of one gear next to a bearing (see pic), should I keep it, or get my money back? It kinda looks like something that was hit with a ball peen hammer.

you might be able to press that gear off and replace it... its the speedometer gear, on the kaaz front diffs they are bought seperate and pressed on, not sure about the quaife. but if you bought it like that definately return/exchange it

Scott - Congratulations on your purchase. :thumb: It looks OK to use. As long as the teeth on the gear are not damaged, the scuff marks will not affect anything. If you are truely worried about the scuffing, simply heat it up and remove it. Then take your speedo ring gear off of your stock diff., and put it on. But, if I were you, I would use it as is. When do you plan on installing it?

Thanks Paul. I won't be installing until next spring, along with a new clutch, and possibly a new flywheel (if needed). The car is in storage for the winter now.-Scott

if you bought it used then yeah just use it... the only thing I would do is file off any rough edged if their are any on the broken teeth b/c they might tear up the plastic gear on the speedometer sending unit. that speedometer gear is a cast piece on the stock front diff. so you wouldn't be able to press it off, but if you need the part # for this one just let me know.

If they are all casted on, then how and why are they sold seperately through the dealership?? I thought the 6-bolts were casted on, and the 7-bolts were pressed on....

Both 6 & 7 bolts are cast pieces... The dealer sells them for a different car/different year, but Kaaz and Quaife use them naturally b/c they are adaptable and its one less gear for them to cut & reduce cost.

Wow, I didnt know that. I learn something new everyday on this site. Thanks. :thumb:
So everytime someone puts an Quaife or Kaaz in their DSM, it requires a new speedo gear from the dealership, right? What if the casted gear on the stock diff get's damaged. Then what would you do?

Talk about diggin up an old thread.

Anyone know the mitsu part number for the speedo drive gear that gets pressed onto the Quaife front diff?

I think it might be the 2g NT speedo gear, but I'm not sure.
Can anyone verify this?

Chris, I cannot remember it off the top of my head currently, but Road Race Engineering should be able to get them for cheap. Contact Sam over there.
