sequential shifting is a manual tranny with pushbutton shifting, right. has anybody ever seen a kit to change a manual car to sequential? it seems to me that you would need 2 solenoids for the 2 linkages to the tranny, 1 for disengaging the clutch, and some computerized controls for proper feathering of the clutch. maybe feathering isn't the right word.

is this some crazy idea? i know the SAE formula car at my college used a motorcycle engine, think from a cbr 600, and they converted it to fuel injection and sequential shift.

Motorcycles are sequential from the factory. In Formula SAE (I'm on Oregon State's team), you don't need the clutch after the start. All we used is a shift solenoid and an ignition kill circuit to unload the tranny for 50 milliseconds, then BAM!! your in the next gear. Wouldn't that be nice on DSM's ;)

There is a kit, but its quite pricey...15K... this is the shifter, and the sequential gear box itself... WRC uses this setup.... unless you're driving some hard core rally i dont see any benefit from this setup....

Its possible!

You would need lots of specialized stuff though:
- the three solonoids or slave cylinders to actually do the shift/clutch function.
- accumulator to assure you have the energy to shift
- pressure source (this is easy; just bleed off the power steering pump)
- timers for the sequencing of the shift (electro/hydraulic are available)
- paddles/switches for up/down shift function

Problems to solve:
- variable clutch slip rate: how do you tell your "computer" the difference rom a slow acceleration and a drag race? You could manually tune a slip rate using a bleed valve (i.e. orifice) in the clutch release circuit, but it would be good for one rate though.
- reverse? How do we get there?
- Dummy controls: what do we do if Mr. Dummy is in fourth and refuses to down shift? Do we let the engine stall out or automatically downshift or go to neutral?
- timing. You controls and sequencing better be spot on of your will have very nasty sounds for all to hear!

It can be done! Ferrarri and Toyota have shown that it is possible! Now its your turn!

my 2 best friends and I have made a plan for one and plan on working it out over winter and building it/install mid or late summer unless sumthing comes up, it will have all out race semi race and street mode, all good ideas and benifits of "never" missing a gear and it would be fast.

There are several large problems that will have to overcome to make the system work.
1. The synchros will not let you shift any faster than with your hands
2. Will the stick be eliminated? If not, you would not be able to use it anymore because the linkages would be connected to the automation and you would not overpower the hydraulics with your hand.
3. Downshifts? you have to incorporate the system with engine management in order to have engine to match revs. Have fun with this one.

The sequential systems require extensive programming to even function, let alone function well. I remember reading about the sequential in the Aston Martin and how well it worked. It took months to complete the programming even after they finished the mechanicals. Bear in mind the resources they had versus the privateer. Anything is possible, but I believe there are better ways to accomplish the results you are after.

DSMafia, where did you find sequential shift kits for $15k? Those systems are significantly more expensive, all $15k will get you is a Ralliart dogbox for the EVO.
