I have posted before but my 2nd gear is grinding REAL bad now, and if i slowly put it into 3rd it wants to grind a little bit, also sometimes 1st. New tranny, or sncryos, or what?

If it is a new tranny how much do those run?
how much would replacing the syncros cost?
And if i did it myself how hard is it on a scale 1-10, 10 beeing the hardest.

Thanks

By chance do you have your original Clutch Master Cylinder still in the car?

Everything in the tranny is original...would this have something to do with it?

If your Clutch Master Cylinder (on the firewall next to Brake Master Cylinder) is original amd/or low on Brake fluid - YES - that could certainly affect your ability to shift, I'm sure you've changed the Clutch Slave Cylinder already, changed Tranny Fluid regularly, etc, etc...

Just got the car, everything on it is original pretty much, but he replaced the fluid regularly

they use the same fluid from the same resevoir for the brakes and clutch? and 1G has hydraulic clutchs?

i don't know about going crazy and draining everything like buck said, do some diagnosics. check the color of your tranny fluid and look for little particles. particles are bad. also check the linkages best you can. could just be a loose linkage somewhere. if it is the syncros, then just try double clutching, and shifting without the clutch. if those work then it probably is the syncros.

if it is the syncros you are going to be poor, unless you can find a tranny at the junk yard.

look at it this way, older cars never had syncros so just pretend you have an older car and drive it like one. :)

sweet someone else who says to use the method of changing gears with out the clutch. i use that method for second and use the clutch, seems to work really good once you get used to knowing the point to shift at with out the clutch. only down side to it is sometimes you get lazy and don't even use the clutch. its pretty funny i had the same problem, and had the tranny rebuilt, really doesn;t fix it to well. when i use the clutch i can gurantee it to atleast notch or grind when i shift. when i feel up to not using the clutch i can get it into gear smoother than a brand new car.

PS i also blew a ton of money on trying all the different transmission fluids people recommoend because they say this brand is so awesome. been there tried that nothing really mattered, just make sure the fluid you have is made for a synchromesh gear box and not gear lube.

best thing i can recommed get the aluminum shifter plate bushing and the brass bushing for the linkage under the hood and poly trans and engine mounts. to make the feel in the shifter even more known to your hand. (every vibration helps) i have seen pics of people using skate bearings for where the linkage connects under the hood. one of the days i might try that to looks like a good idea.

speaking of feeling every vibration, what does it mean when you are in gear and you put some pressure on the shifter towards neutral (sometimes even the other way) and you can feel the gears vibrating, but not to the point of grinding? AND my 4th gear moves back and forth as i get on and off the throttle. ????? im not really a tranny guy, obviously, so...... any help would be appreciated. thanks

one thing it means is get your hand off the shifter if you are not shifting. resting your hand on the shifter is not a very good idea. i am not 100% sure what the cause of that feeling is, i don't rebuild trannies either nor do i care to. but i am sure it is a really easy question for a tranny guy. probably has somethign to do with the edges of the gears or the synchros or some thing like that after all the gear is not exactly making the contact it was before you are pulling that back.
