Well,
I performed a quick search and I was not satisfied with the results. I was wondering whether anyone would be interested in helping me out. You see I'm in the middle of performing a tranny swap, and I would like to know how to distinguish trannies through their serial numbers or bar codes.

This is what I got so far, but this is of the net so, I'm not sure whether it's correct.

89-90 w5m33-2 npzs AWD turbo
91-94 w5m33-2-npxv AWD turbo

If you would like to contribute, all you have to do is look under your hood, the DSM label with all your vehicle information on it (if it's still clear). Just post the model of the transmission, it's the third row. (assuming you haven't already performed a swap) (don't forget to post the vehicle info).

Unless you have a repair manual with all the numbers already in them, that would be a lot easier.
Thanks for your time.

Yeah, I've already seen those....thanks
I was hoping on having it a little more accurate. I want to be able to tell the differences between the different w5m33 trannys. Specially the 2g.

All of this info has been copied and pasted from GalantVr4.org into this document. I take no responsibility for the accuracy of it. Sorry for the way its organized, but I wanted it to be the same way it was originally authored.

w5m332 means they are for turbo AWD 4g63 powered 1G, GVR4 and evo 1-3 (don't know about evo iv and beyond, anyone?).

nq -> is for the GVR4 (US and JDM)
np -> if the the US 1G and some 2G cars (up to 96; in '97 MMC switched from np to mu for the 2G)
c50ph -> is the switchable tranny (2wd/4wd)
c51ph -> if for the 88-89 JDM VR4 (early GVR4s) and select foreign market (a specimen was reported in Australia for example) GVR4s

All of the above are compatible with the GVR4 3 bolt and the 1G 4 bolt rear diffs.

wq -> is for the GVR4 RS and the evo1
evo2 and evo3 -> trannies each have letters that are different from all of the above and from one another.

The wq and evo2 and evo3 trannies DO NOT work with the US GVR4 3 bolt nor the US 1G 4 bolt rear diffs. The above data was gathered from multiple lists over a period of two years. I have found no exceptions to date.

PS -- As an FYI there are some wierd ones, for which I cannot comment about their compatibility with US cars. I'd stay away from these. They are:

nr -> unknown
f5m332sp -> unknown
w5m33?nn -> unknown
w5m33?mn -> unknown

W5M31 is a non turbo galant gsx

what are the specs of the W5M33-2MMZL tranny? I got this in my car right now, tranny shop put it in 2yrs ago. had to change the shifter input shaft, the other one was shorter or something and they had to take the counter weight off. I have the serial number also if that helps.

Thanks,
Kendel

Model# W5M33-2MMZL
Serial# TV3638

why not question it, if its wrong or could cause more of a problem, I can get rid of it while its on my work bench not in the car.

Plus I wanted to know more info about this model tranny since its not a normal tranny for this car.

the only thing that could cause a problem is the front diff ratio not matching the the t case causing the front wheels to rotate at a different speed than the rear.

where did you get the tranny from? if you are sure its a jdm, then it could be anything.
the code you posted is nothing close to the others in this thread.

have you tried searching the WWW?

yes tried searching the web, called magnus motorsports they couldn't help me. Now I have a email in to john at shepracing.com to help me figure this out.

I belive it to be a JDM tranny becuase someone has mentioned a EvoIII or RVR tranny in a few posts, but there are only 3 post about this model number.

I've asked him before about jdm tranny's. he said they could be anything. he recommended finding a local one, that way you knew what you were getting. what is a RVR?

where did you find these posts?
mind posting links?
anyway, i don't know what that is....post anything that you find.

Thats all the info I found from now from DSMTalk.com and the reason I said the mini-van tranny or evoIII tranny is because when I searched the model number of the tranny, someone had posted that as a answer on DSMTuner.com.

But thats still good info above.

I called tigerjapanese and after a couple days they finally called Japan and the answer is MNZL= 96 Galant RVR which they claim shares the same drivetrain as an evo 3, but all in all now we know.

"The Mitsubishi RVR is a compact MPV produced by Mitsubishi Motors between February 1991 and 2000. It was known in Europe as the Mitsubishi Space Runner and Mitsubishi Expo LRV in the United States, while export markets in Asia and Oceania used the original Japanese name. The RVR had also been sold by Chrysler as the Dodge/Plymouth Colt Vista and Eagle Summit Wagon captive imports in North America.

The top models used the drivetrain of the first Mitsubishi Galant VR-4; a 4G63T 2.0 L 16V DOHC turbo mated to either a four-speed auto or a five speed manual. Open front and rear differentials were used. Power output is rated at 170 kW (230 PS)."

I joined the evocrew.com forum and finally I found the truth about RVR and EVO's, the RVR is a beautiful cousin of the colt awd and shares the drivetrain. The MMZL is for the RVR and is the same as the evo 3, the early RVR's had no LSD in the rear but the newer gear sports has and lsd. So the diff between the two is LSD.

I found an even better decoding information! Of all places, it was on Belarus Mitsu forum :) Fortunatley, they talk Russian, so I was able to translate it. Here is the original source:

Mitsubishi Club Belarus :: Ïðîñìîòð òåìû - Íà êàêîé àâòî óòàíàâëèâàëàñü êîðîáêà W5M33-2?

There are still a lot of question marks, but this is the first time that I have seen it decoded letter by letter. I think that we should be able to complete this puzzle :)

Anyway, this is what they had to say:

Last 4 Letters on the transmission code:

1st letter – Final Drive Ratio

N = 3.545 ratio
W = 3.909 ratio

2nd letter – gear ratios

O = dunno ratio?
P = dunno ratio?
Q = close ratio?
R = wide ratio?

3rd Letter – Front Differential

B = open front diff
F = ?
G = ?
W = viscous front LSD
X = ?
Y = open
Z = ?

4th Letter – Type of car it was used on. (Mounting locations?)
D = CB Lancer
E = CC Lancer
K = HH/HJ Galant
M = Galant
S = 89-90 Eclipse AWD 5spd
T = DSM G2
V = 91-94 Eclipse AWD 5spd mfg 6/90-2/94

Front LSD uses a different crownwheel, and a longer drivers side inner

From my friends with a switchable 2WD->4WD JDM Galant trans that I would LOVE to get a hold of:
C5OPH-EK1420 or C5JPF-FL8420
See JDM FWD/AWD Switchable Tranny for more details.

W5M33 2NQBK and under that it reads KD6377 -1990 Mitsubishi Eterna ZR-4

I have never heard this mentioned before, but I found some interesting facts about my 93 Summit AWD transmission. Externally, it looks like a 2G tranny, but bell housing has extra bell housing boss to mount to an extra boss on the 2.4 motor.

On the inside, I found that viscous coupling is about 1/3 smaller than a DSM VC!!! To make it work, the output shaft from the center diff is also smaller (the rest of the center diff is the same as DSM). But there is another visual hint which I never noticed before, the outer cover is actually smaller!!! If you try to put in DSM VC, the Summit/LRV cover will not fit over it!

I never thought that Mitsu would make these small changes, but obviously I was wrong...

I will report if I find any other differences.

I know this is an old thread but thought I could finish it.

I have this box in my 94 turbo ssg rvr. Its 3.545 final drive

This guy confirmed that the final drive is a 3.5 for the MMZL model.

What are the gear ratios for 1st through 5th?

I am trying to figure out what top speed would be at 7000rpm in 5th gear

I have this MMZL trans in my 91 talon awd

Does anybody happen to know what this transmission is? It's out of a 92 talon all-wheel drive. So I'm guessing it's W5M33, but I've never seen these markings on one and it's missing the usual markings. All I know for sure is that it's a 5-speed manual all-wheel drive.
