i just got part of my tranny rebuilt and out of curiousity i asked one of the mechanics at the shop which type of gear oil they put it. He gave me a smart a$$ answer of "the kind it needed" and chatted with him a bit and told him that i had heard that gm syncromesh or redline worked really well. And he gave me a big ol speel of how they are bad and i should only put the kind they did in. i've only changed the fluid once andi put in the exact weight of oil that the factory service manual had said to use. and this guy is trying to tell me that that is how my transmission got messed up. he also said that anytype of syncromesh is bad for my tranny he told me to use gl-.....something can't remember. now is it bad to put in or is he just a moron. cause i know i am or i wouldnt be asking the question. ...

As far as we know, GM/Penzoil Synchromesh has worked fine for our transmissions. It's an alternative to the pricey BG Synchroshift which is like $17/quart nowdays.

BUT you mechanic does make a point. Our transmissions call for GL-4 gear oil specifically. The majority of fluids you'll find are GL-5, which is corrosive to the brass synchros used in DSMs.

GM/Penzoil synchromesh does not state it complies with GL-4 standards. In fact, a while ago on this forum, someone e-mailed Penzoil asking about this and Penzoil replied that Synchromesh has NOT meet GL-4 standards.

Personally, I only use BG Synchroshift which does comply, and specifically states on the bottle that its safe for brass synchros. Many people claim Synchromesh is the same as Synchroshift. It very well may be --- but I've got a $1500 Shepherd transmission in my car and I'm not going to take any chances trying to save a few bucks on Synchromesh over Synchroshift.

Stick with BG Synchroshift. Hey, even the Mitsubishi dealership carries it so you know it's safe. I would say your mechanic is a smart guy.

I've never heard anything bad at all about syncromesh. I've been using it for quite awhile without any problems at all as have many other people. Maybe if shifting smoother without grinding messes up trannys he's right.

on the back of the synchromesh bottle it says it is safe for brass and other colored medals. if the mitsu dealer caries BG ill just get some of that though. im getting a grind into 2nd now and im hoping that or adjusting the clutch will fix it. if not it looks like my tax return is going for a tranny.

DO NOT USE GL-5 in our trannies. i put some in my n/t (1992 4g63) by mistake and less than a month later i fubared the tranny.

I seriously doubt that lube could affect a gearbox in the space of a month.

However, the official (Quaker State/Pennzoil) line on Synchromesh:

What Mopar says:

The Stealth view:

I use it. Many of us do. Virtually all who do love it. I've yet to hear of _any_ feedback indicating, despite corporation serial numbers, any problems with running it in DSM transmissions.

Of course, you are welcome to buy your own vowels and form your own clues.

What I've always wanted an answer to is whether Synthetic is OK in our Trannies - I've heard it was bad for the VC's - that the VC's were "self contained" so it didn't matter - etc - etc - can you use Syn or not? I currently use Syn in the Transfer case & LSD Rear diff - Dino Valvoline GL-4 80W-90 in the Tranny.

i would not have believed it myself had i not experienced it myself. after i changed it my car shifted great, better than it had in years. then one day i was coming home and all of a sudden i lost 3rd and 4th gear, i wasn't driving hard or anything. now i openly admit to fubaring my awd tranny :D ... i was in a bad mood and lets say i negotiated an uncooperating 3rd gear in MASSIVE traffic. needless to say i lost 3rd gear, didn't drive the car for weeks then one day deceide to try to taek her for a spin... i barley got down the block before every postion became a gear (only disengaging when clutch pedal pressed). but happy days, i have a "new" tranny and act 2600 :thumb: so it's all good
