Lets just ask that if you were not paying attention and an AWD were towed without a wheel dolly (rear wheels on the ground) what would break???

I would think the center diff would go for sure.

the center diff would not break, the clutches in and around it would fry. there for would not be awd anymore

i have heard of extreme cases where the diff. gets so hot that it kinda welds itself. to where it is frozen up and you cant go anywhere. but if you towed it like that you are gonna need a new center diff. and hope that you didnt mess up the rear end while you were at it.
